Rated 5 out of 5 by bcornell From direct experience: works on all versions of Magento
We've been using this extension since v1.3. It's worked on every version of Mage through v1.8.
Do yourself a favor: after you install the extension, delete the files under var/cache, then log into admin again. It will work, then.
Magento "disabled" cache is NOT fully disabled; there are still files on disk that can interfere with new extensions. This is not ArtsOnIT's fault, it's Magento.

DO NOT BUY THIS PLUGIN!!
The support is the worst kind out there, 5 days no answers, and the plugin will crash your shop.
I tried it on magento 1.8

Does what it should; keep visitors off my webshop during construction and maintenance!
Do not forget to log out/in after installing!

Just installed this extension even though I read the reviews about taking all the site offline, backend as well.
But I did install through connect and it works as described.
I did this:
1. installed from connect with key from this page
2. logged out from connect page
3. went back to backend admin page and logged out from there
4. logged back in and went to configuration and found the 'Offline Mantenace' button under advanced tab
5. opened it up and checked store offline and website status
All works :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by rmbranson Having Problems Read This
I'm new to Magento so got tripped up by this as this was the first extension I had installed.
Did not read the comments first about clearing cache and logging out and back in etc. So I ended up seemingly being locked out of my site both on the front end and on the backend login page. But it was not the new extension working that locked me out but a default action of Magento.
Here is what I did and it appears to have worked.
With your FTP client
Delete Cache here:
Then remove the “maintenance.flag”
FTP to the root of your installation of Magento and delete the file “maintenance.flag”.
Magento is setup so that when this flag is set, the entire site will be shut down.

Using this on test server, after installed you will need to log out and back in. To find the settings goto -> System -> Config -> Advanced -> Offline Maintenance.
One question, as I have this installed on my test server, will it block bot's from crawling my website. I don't want to lose my ranking.
