RSS Reader User Guide

Version: 1.2.0

Website: http://ecommerce.aheadworks.com

===== 1. Introducing RSS Reader RSS Reader is the software for organizing and displaying external RSS feeds. This data exchange solution was thoroughly adapted by aheadWorks Co. for Magento-based stores.

The RSS Reader extension by aheadWorks doesn’t come short of the functionality of any other RSS aggregator. It fulfills the same task – gathers and displays any kind of feeds you wish on your store pages. For example, you can make news from your blog displayed on the product pages; those who have several stores can configure the extension to display news from each other’s blogs; some information on neutral themes, such as weather forecast or exchange rates, can be displayed on the Home page, etc.

RSS Reader gives you a possibility to display any feeds on different pages and the Guide below will help you to make it by the example of displaying news from the official websites of mobile phones companies. Besides, you will find the detailed information about the extension configuration and learn how to make the RSS feeds block look like, for example, native Magento block of the Default theme.

There are three ways for RSS block inserting – via CMS or layout file. Two ways (via CMS) are described in this Guide, the third way you can find in the extension package.

Manage Pages

1. Go to the CMS → Manage Pages backend page.

2. Select the page you want the RSS feed to be displayed on. We have chosen the Home page for this Guide.

3. In the Content field, insert the following block in braces in the place you want the RSS feed to be displayed:

block type=”rssreader/list” template=”rssreader/list.phtml” feed_url=”FEED URL HERE”

Instead of the FEED URL HERE phrase, insert the URL of the required feed. Note: one URL should be inserted in one block. You can use as many blocks as you want, but don’t forget to set up the extension carefully for correct feeds displaying (for the extension configuration see chapter 3).

4. Click the Save Page button.

Now the news from the sites are gathered and displayed on the Home Page under the menu:

Static Blocks

You can create a new static block and make the RSS feed displayed on the specified category page.

Let’s make the news from Nokia and Sony Ericsson official websites displayed not only on the Home Page but on the Cell Phones page either (this way is convenient for those who sell various products).

1. Go to the CMS → Static Blocks backend page.

2. Click the Add New Block button (you can also select the already created block and edit it).

3. In the Block Title field, enter the title of the block.

4. In the Identifier field, specify the block identifier.

5. In the Store View field, define the store(s) for block displaying.

6. In the Status field, select Enabled.

7. In the Content field, insert the following block in braces:

block type=”rssreader/list” template=”rssreader/list.phtml” feed_url=”FEED URL HERE”

Instead of the FEED URL HERE phrase, insert the URL of the required feed. Note: one URL should be inserted in one block. You can use as many blocks as you want, but don’t forget to set up the extension carefully for correct feeds displaying (for the extension configuration see chapter 3).

In this example we have used the HTML and CSS elements to make the RSS feeds block look like native Magento blocks of the Default theme – My Cart, Compare Products, Popular Tags, etc.

8. Click the Save Block button.

To make the static block displayed on the specified category page, go to the Catalog → Manage Categories backend page.

1. Select the required category on the left (the Cell Phones category for our example).

2. Select the Display Settings tab on the right.

3. In the CMS Block field, select the RSS feeds block you have just created (or edited).

4. Click the Save Category button.

Now the RSS feeds block is displayed on the Cell Phones category page only and the news from Nokia and Sony Ericsson official websites are displayed:

3. RSS Reader Configuration

1. Go to the System → Configuration → aheadWorks Extensions → RSS Reader backend page.
