Disabling a module results in the suppression of the html output including layout updates for the specified module.

It is not clear how or why one would leverage this feature. In my case, disabling of a module resulted in hours of troubleshooting why an overridden _beforehtml method was working fine on my development machine but resulted in a blank page on my test server
