Description

This document details the important changes to Magento Connect with the release of Magento 1.4.2.

Major Changes

One of the biggest changes to Magento Connect 2.0 is a new extension format. In the past, you were given an extension key and when adding to Magento Connect Manager, it would add the extension and options to the backend of your Magento store.

With this new version, we’re introducing support for dependencies. You will still receive an extension key which is displayed in the form of a URL which you’ll add to the Magento Connect Manager. This support allows you to be able to install extensions and also be alerted of important information on why the new extension may interfere with a previously installed extension or possible prerequisites in order to make the new extension function properly. The new Magento Connect additionally introduces a new package.xml during the packaging process – which is why it’s important to be aware of backward capability issues – as 2.0 will not be able to recognize the package.xml from previous versions and vice versa.

Important Note about Backward Compatibility

If you have a NEW extension to upload (one that has not previously been added to the Magento Marketplace) it is important for you to be aware that while using this new Magento Connect Manager, you’ll need to take important steps in order to support the merchants who have NOT upgraded to the new version. This means you’ll need to upload your extension, and then re-upload it as an update. FIRST package and package and upload the extension using current version of Magento Connect Manager (1.4.1) This assures you that your product can be available to those who decided not to upgrade Magento/Magento Connect.

Next, repackage and upload the extension in the new 2.0 format as an update. There is no need to create an additional extension profile. Simply edit the extension, and upload the new file. The extension will be recognized as 2.0 and then give the merchant two available download options.

Important Note

Please be aware that if you ONLY upload your extension in 2.0, you will be UNABLE to then to go back and provide a pre 2.0 version of your extension and merchants will only see one option in download drop down menu.
