This is an old revision of the document!

Description

This document details the differences between Magento Connect 1.0 and Magento Connect 2.0. When downloading certain extensions, you will now be prompted to choose from Magento Connect Version 1.0 or 2.0.

How do I know which version of Magento Connect Manager that I have?

The only versions of Magento which carry 2.0 are:

  • Enterprise Edition 1.9-RC3 & later
  • Professional Edition 1.9 & later
  • Community Edition 1.4.2.0-RC1 only
  • Community Edition 1.5 & later

Please be aware that Magento 1.4.2.0-RC1 was considered a “Release Candidate” and was released in a beta state. Beta versions are not intended for production use.

Major Changes for 2.0

With this new version, we’re introducing support for dependencies. This support allows you to be able to install extensions and also be alerted of important information on why the new extension may interfere with a previously installed extension or possible prerequisites in order to make the new extension function properly.

The downloading method is still the same: you receive an extension key that you paste into your Magento Connect Manager, which starts the download into your Magento store. However, there is a new extension format which developers need to take into consideration. The change will be transparent for Merchants.

The new format introduces a new package.xml during the packaging process – which is why it’s important to be aware of backward capability issues – as 2.0 will not be able to recognize the package.xml from previous versions and vice versa.

What is the difference between RC1 and RC2

We were testing the new format in RC1 but had to remove it due to complications. We hope to re-introduce the new format in future releases.

Merchants should upgrade to the latest stable release (1.4.2 at this time.) Select “Magento Connect Version 1.0” when downloading.

Developers should maintain backwards compatibility by running a version of 1.4.2.-RC1 alongside other version of Magento. To support users running RC1, package your extensions in RC1 and upload as a separate release.
