Description

This document details the differences between Magento Connect 1.0 and Magento Connect 2.0. When you land on a profile extension, you now have a choice to download the extension using Connect 1.0 or Connect 2.0.

How do I know which version of Magento Connect Manager that I have?

The only versions of Magento which carry 2.0 are:

– Enterprise Edition – Professional Edition – Merchants and Developers who have downloaded 1.4.2.0-RC1 and not updated when 1.4.2.0-RC2 was made available.

Please be aware that Magento 1.4.2.0-RC1 is considered a “Release Candidate” which means that it’s a beta. You should awalys be careful when using a release candidate. If your plans are to put it into production - please back up your system first.

Major Changes

When you land on a profile extension, you now have a choice to download the extension using Connect 1.0 or Connect 2.0

One of the biggest changes to Magento Connect 2.0 is a new extension format. In the past, you were given an extension key and when adding to Magento Connect Manager, it would add the extension and options to the backend of your Magento store.

With this new version, we’re introducing support for dependencies. You will still receive an extension key which is displayed in the form of a URL which you’ll add to the Magento Connect Manager. This support allows you to be able to install extensions and also be alerted of important information on why the new extension may interfere with a previously installed extension or possible prerequisites in order to make the new extension function properly. The new Magento Connect additionally introduces a new package.xml during the packaging process – which is why it’s important to be aware of backward capability issues – as 2.0 will not be able to recognize the package.xml from previous versions and vice versa.

What is the difference between RC1 and RC2

Because of Backward compatibility issues, we are suggesting that if you’ve installed 1.4.2.0-RC1 – you also install newly released 1.4.2.0-RC2. The difference with RC2 is that we’ve removed the Magento Connect 2.0. If you have downloaded this, after you installed 1.4.2.0-RC1 - You’ll be using Connect Manager 1.0 again. Any added extensions that were added using 2.0 will be removed from your system with the new install.
