This is an old revision of the document!

Shopping cart price rules can require a lot of trial and error to get them right. I’ve started this wiki article to capture in one place the recipe (conditions, actions and settings) that successfully implement some common promotions, so that we can all avoid some of the experimentation each time we go to set these up.

For more background on how shopping cart price rules work, please see this Knowledge Base article–What Are Shopping Cart Price Rules and How Do I Use Them?

Because this is a wiki article, please add to it with your promotion examples and correct anything that needs changing for later versions of Magento.

These promotions were tested with Magento CEv1.4.

Percent-Off Promos/Coupons

All of these Percent-Off promotions can be set up with and without coupon codes. To set up percent-off promotions, go to ADMIN: Promotions→Shopping Cart Price Rules. Set the information in the “Rule Information” tab as desired. Use the guidelines below for filling in the “Conditions” and “Actions” tabs. As always, be sure to test your promotion before making it live.

Free shipping on orders over $XX

To provide free shipping on orders that exceed a certain monetary value, follow these settings. This example shows free shipping on orders over $100.

Conditions: Use the following settings. (Why does it show $95, not $100? I’ve had customers call to complain when their order is $99 and they don’t get the free shipping. Honestly, it costs more to take the call than to fudge a little bit on the cutoff values.)
