What is Magento Mobile?
Magento Mobile is a product that makes it easy for Magento merchants to create customizable, native storefront apps for the iPhone, iPad and Android using the same product catalog information on their website. Included in the current product is an admin panel to customize and configure your mobile storefront, as well as the ability to submit your app through Magento to iTunes or Android stores.
Our dedicated Magento Mobile team will test the application and manage the submission process to the marketplace on your behalf.
Why did Magento build this product?
Large online eCommerce players such as Amazon and eBay are now driving billions of dollars in sales through their native mobile applications. Native apps also have great features for brands to build relationships with customers. Magento has always been at the forefront of positioning our community for success, and building a mobile product was the logical next step in order to help our 60,000+ stay ahead of the curve.
Where do I find my application key after purchase?
Once logged onto www.magentocommerce.com, navigate to your Account Information. The application key can be found on the left hand side under Magento Mobile – Mobile Applications. After the extension is installed, use this key to submit your app to Magento.
How does Magento Mobile work?
You start off by installing the extension in the mobile admin, which is available free of charge, and use it to configure your app (Enterprise and Professional Editions 1.10 and higher and Community Edition 1.5 and higher already have this built in). Once you're ready to submit an application through Magento Mobile, you will be required to enter an "app key", which can be purchased from the "plans and pricing" tab, or through your My Admin panel on this website (see 'Magento Mobile' in the left column after logging in).
We take care of the process from there and notify you once your app is live in the app store and available for download.
Can I demo my app before I submit it?
Yes. There is a Magento Store Mobile iPhone App available for download in the iTunes App Store. Directions on how to use this preview app can be found in this blog post.
How long does it take to deploy an app through Magento Mobile?
Once you submit your app to Magento, the timeline is subject to the iTunes App Store approval process, which can be between 2-3 weeks. In some circumstances, this process can be shorter.
Android apps are instantly available in the Android market once submitted by the Mobile team.
What versions is Magento Mobile compatible with?
Magento Mobile is compatible with Community Edition 1.3 and higher, Enterprise Edition 1.6 and higher, and Professional Edition 1.8 and higher.
How much does Magento Mobile cost?
Magento Mobile is designed to dramatically reduce the costs to deploy a native commerce storefront. When you are ready to submit your app through the Magento Mobile admin, you need only pay a one-time $799 start-up fee, as well as a $699 annual maintenance fee.
There is also a monthly-payment program available for $69/month. Magento manages the iTunes and Android submission and ongoing code maintenance for you.
Can I change the branding & appearance of my app after it is live in the apps marketplace?
Yes. Anything under the "Design" tab in the Magento-Mobile admin can be updated even after your app is live, and users can view your changes without needing to install an update. However, any changes you make to the core app file, including your app icon, name, description, etc. will warrant a resubmission.
How do I create a theme optimized for for my Magento mobile store?
These tools are already available to you free of charge within your Admin Panel. Under the Systems tab, select Configurations. From here, locate the Design tab on the left hand side, select Themes, Default. This allows you to add an exception such as for the iPhone, with the value iPhone_theme. Is the app source code available?
Yes. The iPhone app source code is available for $6,995 per app, per year. If you are interested in licensing the source code to create your own app, please click here to contact us for more information.
Both iPad and Android source codes will be available for purchase later this year.
What if I need to resubmit my app?
Any changes you make to the core app file, including your app icon, name, description, etc. will warrant a resubmission. Each resubmission is $100, and you can purchase resubmission keys from within the mobile admin (submission tab) after your first submission.
What creative assets do I need to prepare for Magento Mobile?
You will need to produce separate creative files for each mobile app:
- Large App Icon (usually your brand logo): This will appear in the app store but not within the app
- Custom App Icon: This icon will appear on users’ phones after they install your app (Apple automatically applies a gradient to this image)
- Loading Splash Screen: Image appears while the app is loading
- Small Header logo: Logo appears in the header on select pages within the app
- Banner Image: The first image users will see after the app loads
- Copyright logo: Logo appears on the copyright page
- Background image: Image lays behind the category listing page
- Top-level Category Thumbnails: Images shown on the home page allowing you to drill down within each category. Please upload all top level categories.

Building Tips
What to do before you submit your app to Magento:

Update your extension with the latest source code from: http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/Magento+Core/extension/4457/magento_mobile Scroll down until you can download the appropriate version of Magento Mobile.
If you created an application with an older version (before October 15), once the extension is up to date:
- Copy all the images from media/xmlconnect directory to media/xmlconnect/original directory
- Make the folder permission of media/xmlconnect/original and media/xmlconnect/custom as 777 or they can run the shell command as ⇒ chmod 777 -R media/xmlconnect
Create a Separate Store View (via the Admin Panel) - In order for your app to pull in different information than your website, a new store view must be created and then associated to your application. Navigate to the System tab > Manage Stores > on the right hand side click 'Create Store View'. This way, changing something on your webpage will not affect the application, and vice versa. (This also makes it easier to track orders via the application or the website.)
Update all Category Thumbnail Images (via the Admin Panel) – Navigate to the Catalog tab where you can ‘Manage Categories’. Then select one of your top level categories on the left. The third option down is thumbnail image where you upload an 80x80px image that will show up in your mobile app for that category.
Update the App’s Copyright Information (via the Admin Panel) – Navigate to the System tab > Configurations > on the left hand side click the Design Tab > under Footer > Copyright. Please place the copyright information you would like to use within the App.
Short description vs. description (via the Admin Panel) – Please make sure to update both fields. Short descriptions are shown on the Product Information Page and should be a brief explanation of the product. The full description should include everything you need to know about the product. Navigate to the Catalog tab > Manage Products > click on a product to fill out both description fields.

Mobile Optimized Themes
If you are looking for a mobile optimized web theme for your Magento store, it is already available to you free of charge. This is managed in the Admin Panel under the Systems > Configurations > Design tab on the left hand side > Themes > Default. This is where you can add an exception such as iPhone with the value iPhone_theme.
