Blog - Community Edition by aheadWorks
Great plugin & Great Support too.
Great plugin, simple to use.
Also after installing the Magento Blog plugin I noticed a minor bug that renaming the URL path to the blog didn't update the sitemap. Aheadworks fixed this in 24hrs and sent me a simple patch!

Not a bad module - BUT | PLEASE READ
This module is great at what it does, however, while we all know that having a BLOG is a great SEO tool, what most people don't that search engines are extremely picky at the way our websites are presented... In TEXT format.
The module looks great when using any standard browser, but if viewed in a text browser a #Blog is placed above the header regardless of if the RSS feed option is enabled or not this WILL be negatively viewed by search engines, especially if you want to have a link in your top menu items (duplicate content).
Just be aware when installing this that if you do not pay close attention to the way your site is viewed in a text browser and correct the #Blog bug that you are doing more harm than good.

A cheap blog, a little buggy, templates seem to have been coded very quickly (little factorisation etc).
However, it's usable with a bit of work.

A good blog with weak installation process
The process of installing this plugin is more challenging than others that I have worked with. Moreover, deployment from the Magento Connect website does not work at all. Magento Connect 2.0 install URL yield a "missing from server" message in when you try to install from Magento Connect.
Once the product is installed by signing up on the vendor website and manually uploading files, there is no uninstall process short of a very manual one.
From a server maintenance standpoint, the lack of a clean install/uninstall process makes this a daunting component to work with. In the course of trying to manually uninstall it the software in order to re-try the install, our admin area was entirely disabled with an error upon login. The installation process was about 4 hours in total compared to the typical ten minute installs of other components.
It is quite a unfortunate that an otherwise useful plug in has such serious deployment issues. A plug-in should not be listed on Magento Connect if it cannot be installed from this website.

Works Like a Charm
Only issue I had was a default install issue just move the files from the default theme to my custom theme and everything was good to go (1 min fix) Incorporated my own RSS feed grabber and let the web do the work ;) Good job guys (not the flashiest thing in the world but it was free and gave a good base to customize on) Good Work AW!

On The Fence
I installed this extension a couple of months ago on a site that's going to have constant updates. It was easy to install and use, but there is definitely some functionality missing.
Commenter's can't subscribe to the comments. There is also no search functionality, meaning I would have to go and purchase another extension for that.
Another thing; I just found another extension that is paid, and uninstalled aw_blog. For some reason the site speed increased by approximately twice what it was.
However, one of the main issues for me is that the blog home page isn't polished enough. It looks more like an archives page than anything else.
If this extension was improved, I would be more than happy to pay $100 or so for it.

Has worked well over the last couple of years. Good admin interface, lots of parameters, regularly updated, couldn't ask for more from a free extension
Note: If you're not using default/default as your theme remember to move the layouts/aw_blog.xml file and templates/aw_blog folder to your current themes directory otherwise you will just see a blank page.
