Overview

Vertical Navigation with CSS Classes

With this extension you're able to design you own vertical category navigation with subcategories and product count display. Each element has a fine css'ing so you can address each element or group exactly including "first" and "last" element per group and "previos", "active" and "next" child.

By default the module removes the top.navigation via XML-Update and places the vertical nav in "left" structural block.

Several options can be controlled in your AdminPanel under system -> configuration -> catalog as per StoreView:

  • Hide Vertical Navigation (yes/no)
  • Hide Top Navigation (yes/no)
  • Display Product Count (yes/no)
  • Expand on Top Level (yes/no)
  • Expand all categories (yes/no
  • Expand all max depth (number)
  • Root Categories (Store base, current Category, Same Level as current Category, Category Level 2, Category Level 3)
  • Fallback to store base (yes/no)

You should modify the vertnav.css-file in your skin folder to fit your needs. (Please note: do not change the base/default skin file! The delivered CSS file is for showcase purposes only!)

Change Log

  • v0.4.2: Added Portuguese Locale (Thanks Raúl Fishman)
  • v0.4.1: Added Feature Disable on StoreView Base
  • v0.4.0: Added Feature Expand on Top Level Request: If a product is requested without categories in the URL vert nav can figure out the first assigned category and expands the category tree.
  • v0.2.8: Enable/Disable TopNav in Admin-Config - now without changing XML-Files. Define which Levels should be shown on storefront.
  • v0.2.3: You can now setup whether VertNav should show EVERYTHING (nice for jQuery) or just a few levels in the category tree.
  • v0.2.1: New CSS Classes: levelN-active, levelN-inactive oder levelN-parent (where N is 0, 1, 2...)
  • v0.1.9: Category names with accents are possible now. Thanks to Netzarbeiter Vinai Kopp for Coding!

works great on 1.7.0.2 December 19, 2012
Work's as expected in 1.7.0.2. Great extension, saves me a lot of time! Thank you very much. December 10, 2012
There is not menu in my admin to configure it, i go into configuration/catalog and i cant find it. does anyone could help me? December 5, 2012
Received error: Fatal error: Class 'RicoNeitzel_VertNav_Helper_Data' not found in D:\xampp\htdocs\app\Mage.php on line 546 Upon access to System | Configuration | Catalog. Using version 1.7.0.2 I guess I should try again using a fresh install. But this extension isn't even trusted enough to be called version 1. And I don't think it should be so difficult to transport the menu to the left column (without an extension) and make it verticle it using CSS. Okay, here goes. December 3, 2012
Great Extension.Works perfectly fine on my 1.7 MAgento installation. A feature that I am missing: I'd like to have not only categories but also products displayed in the navigation. Has anybody already done something like that? November 16, 2012
Hello, I have installed your extension on my Magento 1.4.1.1 I have multi stores and I would install this menu only on one store… Can you explain me how i can do that because in configuration > Catalogue there is no such option… Thanks a lot October 9, 2012
Hello, The extension works for me on CE 1.7. However, VertNav defaults to the top of the sidebar. I can't seem to figure out how to change the order. Can someone point me in the right direction? Otherwise, great extension. Thanks, Gary October 1, 2012
I have a problem installing it on CE1.7.0.2, i cannot access catalog part on the configuration. when i uninstall it things work again September 28, 2012
I successfully installed the extension, but it has no effect besides hiding the categories from the top menu. It doesn't show anything. Are there any configurations needed in the categories? September 20, 2012
Rico, thank you so much for sharing this extension. It works great for me. Within 20 minutes I was able to switch it to my right sidebar and make basic css tweaks to integrate it into my site. I appreciate that you kept the xml and css simple and easy to update!! September 11, 2012

Answer:
You can either paste the key in your magento connect field (Backend).

Or if you need the pure download package go to http://freegento.com/ddl-magento-extension.php and paste the link there.

We have few categories and subcategories, which we are redirecting to CMS pages. I have installed your extension and seeing the category box with root categories only. We want to see, if any of the categories or sub categories(Redirect to CMS) selected, it will display(as open) subcategories for that root category like in your example screen shot. Is it possible to do it with your extension? or you are planning on that?

Thank you

Answer:
If you want to keep your Navigation path, while linking to cms pages, the best way I can think of is, use a static blocks instead.

You can link directly to a static block via your category manager.

set custom root level

Avatar Image Url:: http://www.magentocommerce.com/images/avatars/uploads/avatar_1272
Customer avatar
Hi,

is it somehow possible to set a custom root level for search?

My Main Root Level is Shop & Info.
But when I' m on the Search Result Page I woul rather have the subcategories of "Shop" listed.

This might be also interesting for pages that are not included in the navigation tree at all.

E.G. If I want the subcategories of Info shown on the order success page.

Best Regards
Nico

Why cant i see the connect manger in the system drop down. I see there is an extension download for the connect manager. But here again you need to use the key. Where do you load the key. Why is this so confusing or is it so simple that i am missing something.

Hi Rico,

I’m using the vertical navigation in my webshop.
It’s now in a test enviroment.

I sell aquarium materials for sweet and salt water.

How can I have 2 different vertical navigation menu’s?

One for “zoetwater aquarium” and “zoutwater aquarium”.

Br,

Stevan

Hi i have installed the Module again after upgrading our store to 1.8 and now try to find out why <?php echo $this->__('Category Navigation:') ?> in left.phtml is not outputting anymore anything useful anymore.
Does anyone have some insights to that.
Thanks in advance.
