Magento and USPS Flat Rate Box Shipping
Save money on shipping! Experienced merchants know that using USPS Flat Rate boxes can save you money. The problem is that in order to use flat rate boxes, you need to ensure that your products fit within the specified weight and dimensions. By default, this check is not accurately performed when displaying USPS flat rate box shipping methods to customers. The result is that USPS flat rate boxes that might not be able to fit the cart items are often shown as an option to customers, which can cause you to lose money on shipping.
The USPS Flat Rate Box extension* solves this problem by using a high-performance, high-accuracy algorithm to figure out if the products in a given order fit into the various flat rate shipping containers using each product’s dimensions (not their volume). Only those flat rate shipping containers that can actually fit the order will be displayed to the customer.
The solution involves something called "bin packing."
What is Bin Packing?
Bin packing is a way of determining how 3-dimensional objects (e.g., your products) fit inside of another 3-dimensional object (e.g., a flat rate box). There is no way of creating a mathematical formula to solve this, and the job must be done by a specialized algorithm.
By using this extension you can be sure that with each order only the "best fit" USPS flat rate shipping container is displayed to your customers, saving money on shipping.
