Out of the box Magento has many decent promotions that can be run, but it does limit what you can do. This promotion engine allows you to have more flexibility in your promotions, targeting specific items where you have the margin to discount or to shift specific stock. Without this extension your promotions are limited to broad groups of products or categories.
