Setting Hidden Categories
Magento Go allows you to organize your catalog by building multi-level categories. Categories help customers find unique product groups in your store.
For example, an apparel store may have the following categories:
- Watches, belts, socks, etc.
Most merchants want their categories to be visible in the top navigation of their storefront. This is often the case — however sometimes you don’t want your categories to be visible in the navigation menu. If you are thoroughly organizing your products with 3-6 levels of category depth, you do not want all of these categories to be visible in the immediate navigation menu.
To give you an example, let’s take a look how many layers deep the categories for a typical winter sports store might be:
Level 1: Boards - Clothing - Accessorize
Level 2 (Boards): Boards - Boots - Bindings - Backcountry
Level 3 (Boards): Freestyle Snowboards - All Mountain Snowboards - Womenâs Snowboards
Level 4 (Freestyle Snowboards): Wide Freestyle - Women’s Freestyle - Regular Freestyle
As you can see, simply breaking down one category makes it clear how many levels of categories are uncovered. It would simply be too overwhelming to have all of these available in your main navigation.
The solution is to hide 3rd or 4th level categories. Creating hidden categories (or hiding current categories) is relatively simple.
To Create a Hidden Category
- In the Admin Panel, select Catalog > Manage Categories.
- From the Categories menu on the left side, select the category you wish to hide from the navigation menu. Once you click it, its information should load into the fields on the right.
NOTE: When looking at the Categories menu on the left side of the Manage Categories page, any of the category folders that a plus (+) symbol in front of them can be expanded by clicking the plus (+) icon.
- Set Include in Navigation Menu to No.
- Click [ Save Category ] to save these changes.
