Uploading Custom Translations

Any locale file can be downloaded as a CSV file, edited in a spreadsheet, and then uploaded back to your store as a custom translation. The custom translation can be applied to the storefront, Admin panel, or both.

Step 1: Download the Archive of Translation Files

  1. On the Admin menu, select System > Translations.
  2. In the Custom Translations list, do one of the following:
    • Click to select the file that you want to use as the basis of your custom translation.
    • In the Action column, click View.
    In the General section of the next page, the language you have chosen appears in the Translation Name and Base Locale lists.
  3. To include Theme Editor Translations, in the Download section, select the Include Theme Editor Translations checkbox.
  4. Click Download to save a zipped archive of the CSV language translation files.
  5. Extract the archive to your hard disk. The archive contains a number of CSV files that correspond to Magento Go modules.

Step 2: Edit the Translation Tables

  1. Open any translation file in your favorite spreadsheet program. The first column contains the base word and the second column contains the corresponding translated word.
  2. Translate any of the base words into the language that you want to appear in the interface of your store.
  3. When complete, save the changes.
  4. Repeat this process for as many of the files as necessary.
  5. When the translation is complete, zip the files into a single archive.

Step 3: Upload the Archive as a Custom Translation

  1. Return to the Custom Translations page. In the upper-right, click the Add New button.
  2. On the New Translate page, in the General section, do the following:
    1. In the Translation Name field, enter a name of your custom translation.
    2. Set Base Locale to the current setting for your store. Change this setting if needed.
    3. In the Upload section, click Browse and select the custom translation zip archive to upload. Then, click the Check/Save Data button to upload the archive.
    The name of your custom translation now appears in the Custom Translations list.

Ongoing Maintenance of Custom Translations

To update a custom translation:

  1. From the Admin menu, select System > Translations.
  2. From the list of available translations, select the custom translation you want to update. Then, in the Action column, click Edit.
    In the General section of the next page, the name of the custom translation and its base locale appear in the Translation Name and Base Locale lists.
  3. In the Download section, do the following:
    1. To allow the interface text to be edited from the Theme Editor, select the Include Theme Editor Translations checkbox.
    2. Click Download to download a zipped archive of the custom translation files.
  4. Extract the archive to your hard disk, and edit the files as needed.
  5. Return to the Edit Translation page, and do the following:
    1. In the Upload section, click the Choose File button.
    2. Browse to select the zipped archive to upload. Then, select the Check/Save Data button to upload the archive.
    3. In the Translation Name field, change the name of your updated custom translation, if necessary.
    4. Change the Base Locale, if necessary.
  6. When complete, select the Check/Save Data button to save the updated custom translation.

To delete a custom translation:

  1. From the Admin menu, select System > Translations.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • In the list, select the checkbox of the custom translation that you want to delete. In the upper-right corner, set Actions to “Delete.&fdquo; Click the Submit button, and when prompted, confirm.
    • From the Edit Translate page, click the Delete button.
