For me, I try to stay away from Japanese hosts.  I am loading up a cart today on Medialayer, They host it in California, and it has proven to be really fast. 

Just me, but Japanese host seem to be over priced and slow to upgrade.

I would love to see a cart on that host and test it’s speed out vs. a host like Medialayer.

Rack do you have a link to a cart on their server?

I also sometimes have the impression the performance of Japanese hosts at the moment may not be very good.. if I just look at their webdesign, the first impression I get is not so good..

I dont know if Magento really fits for Japan.. if I just think how strong the mobile phone share is in internet surfing.. how can magento provide a mobile phone extension? I guess thats quite hard

I think there is a need for Magento in Japan.  I currently work with a lot of zen-carts and there is demand for it here.  You are right about the mobile phone, market, a lot of the phones in Japan are going wide screen and very good support for normal websites.  I have not be able to really tear in to Magento yet, but there may be a way to tweak it to work better for phones. 

Anyways, I feel that Japan is like late 90’s early 2k’s America.  Shopping online is growing here, and will grow. 

Also, development here can be so rich as users connection speeds are so crazy.

So, I think there is plenty of market, and I also think there is a huge market for someone to come in here and take over the hosting business.

Actually, the quality of the rental server of Japan is not good. It is only dissatisfaction even if it sees from the Japanese.
It is not convenient in PHP though convenience is comparatively good for Perl, Python, and Ruby.

And I think a possibility of Magento succeeds in Japan enough.
As for no correspondence to the cellular phone, the template and extension only consider the limitation of the cellular phone.
I think that it only has to make it if not corresponding. I think as such open source.
If it is solved the one that not is without thinking too much difficultly now and not to do by the technology, isn’t it good?

I totally agree that Japan feels right now like it is about to take off with it’s internet market. I hope it is going to! I’m not a big fan of mobile surfing.. but thats just a personal preference…

So in the meantime, CKD, I wonder if it’s really enough to put your webshop up on a californian server..  didnt you encounter any performance problems?

right now i’m planning to setup a small webshop for a publisher so I trying to find a good realiable solution..

Performance problem, not at all.  Net speeds in Japan are crazy fast.  I run fiber for home/office and a mobile card for when I am away.  Most people in Japan have ADSL/Cable/Fiber then there is mobile. 

If you go to speedtest.net and pick a server near you, you can tell me that server, and I bet my speeds will be near your speeds no problem. 

Also, L.A. isn’t that far for networks, I would guess that some Japanese companies are reselling servers in America.

Sure its a huge drop as to me in Japan, but tell me what you get if you are located in America to the same servers.

Also, medialayer has really impressed me so far.  Applications run really fast so far.

So as of now, I am not really afraid of performance, I might search for a Japanese host, but American hosts just offer way more. 

Anyone want to start a hosting company with me?

Anyways, California is the closest for off shore hosting with good speeds.
