Dear Lord! Someone smarter than me get going on this. This is what I need! My fav sites are threadless.com and designbyhumans.com - Both have users, avatars, etc. Elgg integration would take magento to the next level!!!
Well, after searching the web for several hours and not finding a decent solution for this I’ve decided to attack this on my own. My goals are to get both Elgg and Magento to share the same database of users have all the backend of elgg controlled by Magento’s interface. I’ll keep results posted here. I love this community!
Sounds like you might get a similar result by integrating with Drupal or Joomla. We’re currently working on a Drupal integration where Magento sits in a sub-directory of the main site. We’re happy to share our findings with the rest of the Magento community.
Given that Drupal then allows you much more flexibility than Elgg in terms of components, it may be a better route if you want social networking that then fits into content management - not just avatars, blogs, etc.
Sure - will do. We’ve got the first stage complete, where a new Drupal module can call in Magento products to display in Drupal and allow them to be added to cart. The next step is writing a Magento module that can talk with the Drupal module, sharing information about what’s going on. That’s for the first release. After that we might try something a bit smarter.

Just a thought.

Dan,
Please do share your findings. There is a lot of conversation out there about Drupal/Magento integration.
