QuickBooks Sync Progress and Google Code Project

The process of developing the QuickBooks Sync module are already underway, and we are currently working on securing the initial structure of the module, which we expect to be based on the Magento DataFlow module. We’ve already begun to incorporate bits of the QuickBooks Web Connector (QBWC) provided by Intuit as well as the middle-ground-work that allows the two to communicate, such as SOAP server support, etc.

As far as an estimate on the timeline, I can’t offer any details, as there is quite a bit of work to be done on any module as extensive as this. But I can say that we’re doing our best to get the initial structure built and secured. We have also set up a Google Code project to server as an SVN for development code, etc. That can be found here.

If you have specific features you wish to have implemented, please post them to our Technical Details Wiki.

We can certainly use more developers, especially those with extra time, and experience with QBWC and Magento DataFlow. SOAP/Web Services experience is a plus as well. PM me if you fit the bill, and I’ll find a way to get you involved.

Looking forward to the road ahead,
Scott

Was just wondering how this is coming along. Haven’t heard anything in a while.

Wish I had the skill to help with the project.

Things are progressing. We have been working diligently, as our free time has allowed. We hope to have some announcements soon (within the next few weeks). But shouldn’t expect any public release of any beta code tomorrow, or anything. wink

Thanks again for your interest. Keep in touch via this group and we’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for the heads up. Looking forward to this.

Hopefully I didn’t come off as a pest, I was just curious so I can get a rough idea of when we’ll be able to go live with Magento. Our current system relies heavily on QB for order management and shipping so we won’t be able to transition from Zencart to Magento until we have this in place.  In the meantime it gives us time for setting up the cart.

we are in a similar boat. we can not change without QB or it breaks both our accounting and automated shipping system with worldship. No matter how good magneto is we can not completely rework our accounting and shipping system.

Right now we are trying to figure out if it is worth paying for a bare bones mod to be made while this one is finished of if we should just put the whole project on hold until this is done.

i guess in the 2-4 month range its worth waiting for sure,

4-8 months its a tuff decision

8 months and we need to develop a bare bones alternative.

Scott, visiting the GoogleCode site, there was no code in the repo. I wrote another post on my interest in financially supporting this project in the QB group the other day. However, I am rather motivated, and if there is a code base, I will see what I can do to possibly contribute as a developer. Though I don’t have a great deal of time, I do have quite a bit of web-services development experience. So, if there is already are starting point for this project, please point the way.

Pelted, we had to change the project name due to an existing project called qbsync. So we set up a new Google code project, but I haven’t announced that information yet. PM me and I’ll discuss the details further with you.

Being that this is a non-profit project (currently), the developers must keep their major focus on client work so we can get paid. Lately, we’ve all been busier so we work on the project as time allows. There are currently three of us, each working on different sections of the mod. We could always use more help, but the Web Services aspect is already being handled. Where we can use help is on the Magento side at the moment.

PM me if you’re interested in getting involved. I’ll discuss further regarding the areas we can use extra help in. smile

Could you clarify “non-profit project (currently)”?

Infield, that means no one is paying us to develop the module, and we are not releasing it as a commercial mod. I have had some offers by others to donate to the group, but nothing has come of it yet. I don’t expect it to, but if others were interested in donating it would more than likely speed things up. I’m not holding my breath though. wink

we are on the verge of paying someone around $2,500 to produce a mod for this with only the most basic features. maybe a handful of us could get together and make this more viable.

Well with this and the $500 I will throw in, that is a nice chunk if this could get done soon.
Scott, I PM’ed to this regard as well, if you guy think you can do it…

  13. 13infield posted Thu, May 29, 2008

Scott, first off, thanks for taking this on and being the lightning rod for QB/magento integration.

I will contribute now, just let me know where to do it.  smile

Also I bet there are a bunch of feature possibilities beyond the core component. If there were bounties for each feature it would allow community members vote with dollars.

I think for something like that to come even close to working you would need a firm quote, time frame for the project and a list of credentials of the people developing it. At that point you could start a list of people/email addresses who are willing to donate to get it done. Once you have enough people , bill them all and see what happens. If you don’t get all the money within a week refund it all and call it a day. This would motivate people to actually pay rather than see the wheel moving and just hope others pay.

Normally I’d say something like this sounds like a good idea but will never work but in this case it is such interictal piece of software that it can be the deal breaker on wither or not many people even use magento, i know it is for me. I am unwilling to change our automated accounting and shipping system

to be honest the $2400 I’d have to pay our developer is sounding like a better idea every day. Thing that’s holding me back is i think this version will probably be much better when it is finished.

Let me know who/where to donate.  I cannot give a lot, but willing to help pitch in.

Also, I added a feature request to the tech wiki, but not sure if it is possible or not.  Basically we need a Purchase Order to be generated and emailed to our distributor ( we’re trying to get this to work).....and from the accounting perspective, we need that purchase order to be synced with Quickbooks along with Sales Receipts and Invoices. Might this be possible?

Feel free to delete my feature request if it is not feasible.
Purchase Orders (Generated from sales orders - Sent TO our distributor)

Thanks for working on this module

I know the project has not been finished but I would like to get a copy of the most current source code. The programmers in the company I work with may be able to offer some assistance.

    Thank you
