Category menu dissapeared from front end after upgrade

If your category menu has suddenly dissapeared after upgrading magento, it most likely means that your categories aren’t using the correct “store”.

To solve this, you would go to Admin -> System -> Manage Stores

In there, click on the:

Main Website -> and choose Default Store to Main Website Store

Main Website Store -> and choose Root Category to Root Catalog

That should do it!
