Almost 5 years i am researching ecommerce (estores) websites, i am tiring to find best , but non of them have complete functionality, some have good design but poor functions or usability, some are full of various functions, but with bad design or usability...in this group i would like to share best of all design, usability and functionality concept estores, here are some of the interesting estores:
http://www.makeup.com works on http://www.elasticpath.com/ best ecommerce solution, but too expensive from $25 000 – $70 000 , also its demo shop has good design and functionality, almost the same as Magento 
http://www.amazon.com/ best known estore. Good design, best functionality, but not best usability.
http://www.dell.com one of the best.
http://www.laskys.com one of the first with one page checkout. Not the best design and usability, but with some good functions.
http://www.florsheim.com/shop-fl/index.ep interesting shop.
http://www.suitcase.com/ one more interesting store.

I’m all in it for AJAX functionality and intuitive design, but I don’t really think any of those stores are good prime examples of fluid design.
Most of the stores listed have a very conventional method of listing their products, and I find Magento can replicate those styles quite easily.
Dell.com is intuitive for it’s checkout processes when building choosing custom builds for systems, but sites such as Amazon.com is cluttered and obtrusive with having to scroll down miles and miles on product pages, etc.
I do have to agree with you though, Ideally I’m looking for a more lighter design, but all those problems are fixed with a custom design done by oneself.
