In the Press

  • 'Out is In' - Campus Technology Magazine

The benefits are numerous. On the surface, Magento provides colleges and universities with the freedom to customize the solution, tailor it to their business model, and expand on it for years to come. The solution also allows schools to incorporate user-generated content such as ratings, reviews, and tags, as well as the opportunity to integrate more tightly with social networks and alumni networks, to stimulate further sales.

  • Magento in ‘Der Handel’ Magazine (German)

The German retailer focused magazine, Der Handel, covered Magento as part of its open source special issue in March, 2009:

"Jack Wolfskin, Yves Rocher, and TimeOut have all built their websites using Magento, an open source e-commerce solution first released in March 2008. Unlike other ecommerce software, Magento is innovative in its design and functionality. The platform has a well thought out architecture and allows for the creation of multiple stores managed from one website. Netresearch, Magento’s first Platinum Partner , says “Magento gives merchants control and flexibility to create their online stores”. It also has many features to enhance marketing and SEO, and includes integration with other specialized software solutions. Magento keeps focused on the customer’s experience making it a dynamic and exciting e-commerce solution. "

  • CNET: ‘Magento gets Forrester’s attention’

Magento, the leading open-source e-commerce platform, has just notched a new honor: Forrester Research has named it an “Emerging Player to Watch” in its Forrester Wave: B2C eCommerce Platforms, Q1 2009 report.

This is an exceptional testament to the growing momentum of Magento.  Varien’s Magento is the only open-source e-commerce platform named in the report, alongside industry leaders IBM and ATG.

But it’s not what Varien has done with Magento that Forrester deems exciting.  Rather, it is Magento’s momentum, and implicit room to grow, that Forrester calls this out in its report.

  • “Magento Is the Open Source Powerhouse”

While I have certainly not used every shopping cart or ecommerce platform available, I have worked with many of them, and I also have experience with enterprise-level content management systems that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Magento out performed them all. It is an excellent platform [and] probably the best, most flexible ecommerce platform I am aware of.

In some ways, Magento is not a typical open source solution. Yes, Magento’s open source status means that it is free to download. It means that developers can create add-ons and plug-ins to expand its capabilities. In fact, Magento enjoys all of the opportunities for growth and expansion that any popular open source solutions does. But it also has a very committed company backing its growth.

  • CNET: “It’s now a question of ‘how big?’ for Magento”

"Magento, a leading open-source commerce platform, has cracked 500,000 downloads, not to mention its 44,000 community members that have translated the project into over 60 languages ... the real story behind Magento’s success is that it’s breeding copycats. Several proprietary competitors, like Oxid eShop, are throwing in the towel and open sourcing their code, too ... Earlier this year I talked up Varien/Magento as a company and project to watch. I was speculating at that time, but today its success seems relatively sure. It’s now a question of “how big?” for Magento, not “will it take off?”

  • “Magento’s iPhone Theme: Mobile Commerce for the Masses?”

In an article posted earlier today, Practical eCommerce Magazine reviews Magento's iPhone support and provides analysis as to the opportunity mCommerce presents to online retailers.

"Magento's new iPhone theme is an important (if small) step, giving independent e-retailers an easy way to tap m-commerce's amazing potential ... Mobile ecommerce (often call m-commerce) is coming; 9 million Americans have already made a purchase from a mobile device, and perhaps half of the United States' 250 million odd mobile handset users are willing to make a purchase in the near future, according to a recent study from The Nielsen Company ... To address this, Magento developed a special theme or combination of layout, template, and presentation files that are optimized for an iPhone's browser."

  • Magento Featured in Inc. Magazine

Magento is featured in the September issue of Inc. Magazine as part of an article covering “Tools for creating and souping up an online store”.

“ [Magento] is a robust e-commerce application, and it’s free to download. With Magento, sellers can manage multiple stores from one location, and shoppers can make side-by-side product comparisons and read customer reviews. Unlike most open-source software, Magento is relatively easy to use. Plus, it was designed to be simple to customize, so you can add or create new functions and features. “

  • “It’s a Real Winner”

“Those Magento boys and girls are at it again, kicking butt and taking names by releasing a brand-new, expanded 1.1 release of their already feature-rich open source e-commerce program ... In its short four-month existence, Magento has already been nominated for a number of prestigious awards, including the O’Reilly 2008 Open Source Awards and SourceForge.net’s Community Choice Awards. Magento was a finalist in SourceForge’s categories for Best Project for the Enterprise, Best New Project, Most Likely to Change the World and Most Likely to Be the Next $1B Acquisition. How many eCommerce programs can claim that, open source or not? The bottom line: Magento is already loved and accepted by end users and the community. This new release will just create more, worldwide converts. It’s a real winner.”

Interview in Zend’s Enterprise PHP Management News

“The formula is as simple as impressive: The less you pay for your eCommerce system the more profit you get from your business. That’s why the new open source eCommerce platform Magento is currently taking off like a bat out of hell. Combining the flexibility of Open Source technology with all features needed within a modern eCommerce solution and the lowest TCO in the market it gives businesses top flexibility, functionality and ROI. Using Magento business owners can choose from different pricing and support models: starting from a free basic version using community support up to professional support services. Magento has been launched in Summer 2007 by Varien, one of the most experienced players in the Open Source eCommerce market with headquarters in Los Angeles, CA; USA. We talked to Varien CEO Roy Rubin.”

“Magento Shopping Cart And 20,000 Friends” - Practical eCommerce Interview

“So how does Magento stack up against those other commercial, closed source systems? Apparently quite well. Out of the box (or off the server) it competes with the commercial options well, and the community seems to be serving itself with considerable interplay. A look at the forums on the Magento site shows plenty of interaction among the 20,000 members. There are some features that the pay-for-play packages don’t do well.”

"Put in English, Magento is an open-source solution for setting up and managing an online store. The product appears to be pretty robust already, but the roadmap looks even better.
If you need to set up an online store, why pay the six- to seven-figures to do so when you can use Magento for free and then pay when you want support going into production?"

  • Magento: The Zimbra of Ecommerce?

“The approach Magento is taking to ecommerce software is very similar to the approach Zimbra successfully applied to email. Considering the $350 million pay-off Zimbra received from Yahoo earlier this week, Magento may be onto something as they go after one of the Web’s largest segments in ecommerce.”
