This might be related to #15211 (http://www.magentocommerce.com/bug-tracking/issue?issue=6788) but in any case it's a really really urgent show-stopper that has a nasty effect on business and must have a hot-fix release asap!

The issue is that Paypal IPN are not received and as a consequence no invoice is sent to the customer confirming the purchase and the status is left as "Paypal Pending" . Especially as Magento have the bad habbit to include abandoned purchases in its statistics and regural "house keeping" is needed, this can result in a real order gets canceled and indeed that's exactly what happened to me before I realized that something was wrong as the payment arrived from payPal,

I would like to point out that the full solution is what Team Member killoff posted here http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/47584/P30/ there is a serious admin usability issue in that solution. Previously when IPN was returned status was set to "proccessing" and not until after shipping it was set to "Complete". Now it set to "Complete" on return of IPN and when shipping no change is done to Status. This is misleading to customers but also it mean looking at Orders overview you cannot see if an order been shipped or not but have to click in to the order for that. A big drawback on efficiency in my opinion. Please make sure this is corrected. Better choise of status would be "Paid" and "Shipped".]]> #5 / Comment by HarryM

We are running Paypal Website Payments Standard and any Paypal order we receive goes straight from "Pending Paypal" to "Complete". This is a real nightmare and basically makes this payment option unusable. We are running Magento 1.3.2.3
