I think it's reasonable to assume a simple product, disabled and appearing nowhere, would not show up in the grouped product it is associated with. It does, however.

Process:
- create simple product, enable and set to any display.
- create grouped product. enable and set to any display.
- associate simple product to grouped product.
- disable simple product.
- product still shows with other grouped products.

Yes, cache is disabled (and cleared for good measure).

Assuming this is by design, as inventory updates to out of stock. I see the reasoning behind that (to tell the customer we do/may have that product at sometime, but not now). However, with inventory control, this seems either redundant or ineffective.

In this instance (leading up to bug report), the simple product was manually disabled because it may not be carried ever in the future.]]> #2 / Comment by Magento Team
