Getting the following error after I switched on translate inline (admin not front end): System -> Configuration -> Developer -> Translate Inline.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function json_encode() in /var/www/html/app/code/core/Mage/Core/Model/Translate/Inline.php on line 342

This then won't allow me to access our magento admin panel
