im trying to install on my osx dev machine. i upgraded my php, allowed htaccess files in apache, made all the directories write-able, and now i am getting a 403 trying to access the magneto directory. as soon as i remove the htaccess, it accesses fine, but i still can’t get the install dir to work.
arrrgh!
any help is much appreciated.

oh right, 403 is forbidden.. maybe something with permissions? did you try speaking with host support?

Have you tried these commands to make your directories and the .htaccess file writable?

cd magento
chmod o
+var var/.htaccess app/etc
chmod
-R o+w media

This is mentioned in the installation guide.

DirectoryIndex index.php

RewriteEngine on

#RewriteBase /

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/media/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/skin/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/js/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l

RewriteRule .* index.php

Anand, I ran the commands and still the same issue…
:(

I see you’ve added rules to your htaccess file. When I installed Magento I didn’t had to add rules.
Which Linux distro are you using?

Did you install mod_rewrite?
You can do that, depending on your linux distro with:

sudo a2enmod rewrite

After that force a reload of apache.

You may also want to make sure AllowOverrides is on for your docroot, other wise the .htaccess file won’t be read
