Hi,
I went to start work on my first Magento site last night. I installed Magento on my local Windows XP machine for development but the front and backend were both extremely slow (often 10 seconds to load admin pages). This is an empty site with only 1 connected user.

I had MySQL administrator open and there didn’t seem to be crazy number of queries or too much memory usage. I increased the memory available to MySQL anyway, but it made no difference.

So this morning I installed Magento to my shared linux hosting account and the performance was much better. Not super-fast, but definitely usable where the local install is really not usable.

I haven’t installed APC on my local machine yet, but really, I didn’t think it’d be necessary for an empty site on what is essentially a dedicated server with 1 user.

Any ideas on why the performance is so bad on my local machine?
I’m using Apache 2.2, PHP 5.2.5 and MySQL 5.0.51 on an AMD AthlonX2 4400, 2GB RAM

Cheers!

Update
I’ve enabled APC and Xdebug on my local machine to profile the code as it executes. I’m also viewing the client side performance with Firebug and I am quite confused about why pages take so long to load.

Xdebug reports that the server side execution generally has a cumulative time of 500 - 1100ms, which is quite acceptable.
Firebug puts the total time over the “wire” at 0.4 - 2.7 seconds, which again is entirely acceptable.

So as I click around the backend the profiling tools report at most about 4 seconds of stuff happening (client and server total), yet the pages still take around 10 seconds to appear in the browser, ready to use.

As an example:
I just deleted the Californian Tax Rate.
Xdebug reported a 2700ms cumulative time and Firebug just 360ms to load 7 requests yet the page did not respond for a full 31 seconds (using a stopwatch).

Does anyone know why there’s such a discrepency?
I’ve used Firefox 2.0.0.14, IE7 and Opera 9.27 and they are all slow to load backend pages from my local machine.

Thanks for the response.
Yeah, I know the speed issues have been discussed. I just thought it odd that Magento was okay on my shared server, but slow on my local machine. I thought that might indicate that there was something I could locally to get the same speed I get from my shared host.

I’m not sure whether it’s the OS, Apache version, configuration or something else.
