Log settings/error log not working?

Hello All

Have had my log settings enabled for some time (backend - system - advanced - developer) but as far as Ican see I don’t have a system.log or exception.log file.

Even the directory wasn’t there (
located in {{base_dir}}/var/log), so I created it.

Is it likely there is no log as there are no errors? TBH I am expecting a few as I am trying to troubleshoot a problem.

The folder should be created on first logged message.

Did you have error since it was enabled?
Did you put any custom Mage::log(); statements?

No errors as far as I know, I’m just trying to see whether anything is logged in relation to another issue I have (http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/8623/)

Hi, everybody.

I’ve got the same problem: no log file seems to be created (system nor exception) in spite of the log settings correctly enabled.
My changes to the locale options are not being written in the database, I guess some logs could tell me something about what’s going on…

Best wishes,
Francesca

I had the same problem: fixed it by setting 777 file permissions on the var/log directory (it was previously read-only for the web server! whoops!)

My permissions are already set to 777, but that’s not enough for me…

Permissions also set to 777.  No luck however.

I was able to get log messages. I put this code.....

Mage::log('Does this work');

Into a PHP file and Viola - it worked!  I made sure the log directory was writable by the web server and I made sure the file I put the code into was being called.

yep that works… i put it at the end of index.php…
so that means it has nothing to log… because its not logging anything? i would expect at least something in system log if not in error log

I grepped the app directory for “Mage::log”. Isn’t much there in the core. I suppose the logging function is meant for your own code instrumentation ...

Couldn’t believe it an grepped myself: 10 log function calls in the whole /app directory. Are you guys serious??
A logfile who pretty much logs nothing is quite useless…

I’m having problems importing products. The imports process aborts without any error message. Nothing in the apache logs and - of course - nothing in the magento log. How am I supposed to find a solution?!?!
Unfortunately DataFlow is try and error through the whole process.

Sorry for blowing off steam here, Magento is great, but a software with version number 1.1.4 should be ready for production use…

Regards
Marcel

I’ve switched on logging, verified permissions on /var, and added a Mage::log("Log this") statement to index.php that I’m sure is being parsed. Still no log! Anyone?

Tried that too and added a log statement at the *end* of index.php and it gets logged correctly.
Using version 1.1.6, logile enabled in the backend and /var/log/ directory has 777.
However, as we found out in this thread, as long as the core logs almost nothing, the logfile is pretty much useless anyway…
