I managed how to solve the problem starting from this post
http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/6983/

You have to go to your DB and enter in the core_config_data table.
Under this table you have to find under the path column web/unsecure/base_url and edit the value column with the correct url {{base url}} or with the Url of your magento (ex. http://www.yoursite.com)

Have a nice day.

Is it correct to put
http://localhost/magento/
in place of
{{base_url}}
in local environments
(xampp on Win, exactly) ?

If yes, should this be done for both,
the Unsecure and the Secure sections?

Sorry for the coding ignorance rasberry
but I want to know exactly what-to-do…
before doing it, so to avoid disasters cool cheese

Thank you for your precious time, as usual.

In reply to my point above,
I got an answer by Yoav on the blog saying:
it’s ok to do as I said,
but it’s not so important on local environments.

Thank you for your tip, Mich81.com!

I’ve done what you suggested, but it didn’t solve my problem.

I made a search in the database and my old URL was not found at all.

The problem? Cache!

If anybody is having the same problem, don’t forget to delete all of the files and folders from /var/cache!

That solved the problem completely!

You can use change database in table core_config_data config id: 40 web/unsecure/base_url and put new value for it

after changing the base url, any button was dead in the backend. so i checked the database for table “core_config_data” and runned following sql statement to change the wrong value:

UPDATE core_config_data
SET value = ‘correct URL here’
WHERE value = ‘wrong URL here’

after that i tried to clear the cache in magento but it won’t work because of the dead buttons.
deleting all content in var/cache helped instantly, thanx chiclops!

I did the same stunt and screwed up my admin access.  The suggestion here worked for me after I figured out how to modify values in the database.

What a relief, it’s 12:15 AM now, I’m going to bed.

I have done all the steps above but still dont see the changes to my links and cant login to admin as well. Is there anything else that needs to be done other than above steps? I can see the first page fine with new url but all links are pointing to previous url.

I did this once as well.  I was able to add my not-yet-configured-therefore-not-working domain name to my local hosts file for my site’s IP address.  That worked to let me in long enough to put it back to what it was.

Mich81, thank you, thank you, thank you. Going into the DB (via PHP My admin and browsing to web/unsecure/base_url and web/secure/base_url in the core_config_data table worked perfectly.

From a previous comment in this thread:

>> Under this table you have to find under the path column web/unsecure/base_url and edit the value column with the correct url {{base url}} or with the Url of your magento (ex. http://www.yoursite.com)

So the code will look something like this in the last box of the data table?

Replace:

{{unsecure_base_url}}

With:

http://www.domain.com
- no brackets

=========

Replace:

{{secure_base_url}}

With:

http://www.domain.com
- no brackets

Is this all I need to do, I am not familiar with databases.

Please advise is this what you did?

Jim C.
