My problem was as you described.
Url is not accessible
Unable to read response, or response is empty
I am installing to Heart Internet so others with the same problem you may want to try this too.
The code “fix” about was already in my Config.php (albeit on a different line number) so I still couldn’t get mine to work.
However, uploading stormdevil’s Config.php has got me going again though.

The way to fix this is to tick the box for the following question during installation:

Skip Base URL validation before next step

It then works fine.

SO I took the Config.php file from the 1.0.19870 version - uploaded that instead of the 1.0.19870.1 version - and IT WORKED.

Toni .. great post! Worked perfectly after hours of frustration.

Can you (or someone) comment as to what this file change / update actually does. What is the magic ingredient in the config.php file that allow the installation on Heart?

Yes, installation ok but when i click any categories it says

What can you do?

There are no products can be listed. I’m using ver 1.4.0.0

I’ve been going round in circles with this with a clean install of version 1.0.19870.1
I tried the fixes in this thread. They didn’t work.

I then did a file comparison with the 1.0.19870 version (which I had luckily downloaded but not installed). Only 7 files different and one that seemed relevant to installs.

SO I took the Config.php file from the 1.0.19870 version - uploaded that instead of the 1.0.19870.1 version - and IT WORKED.

I’ve attached the file for anyone who didn’t have the previous version.
It goes in app/code/core/Mage/Install/Model/Installer
