There are several ways of sorting your products. And it mostly depends on what kind of store you run.

Some common ones:

Newest arrivals
Lowest price
Highest price
Top sellers
Name
Review ratings

These would be great to have by default.

And the ability to enable/disable them.

I see a lot of ecommerce solutions either requiring a feature to be added or deleted. Rarely disabled or enabled, and keeping the stuff in the database in case you feel like turning it back on.

My further suggestions to be implemented, if possible:

With a time-filter, as in
*Since the last 3 days, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months*

Another filter, too, applicable to each categories, as in:
*Just Arrived in Category 1*,
* Latest arrivals in Category 2*, etc.

Lowest price
Highest price

Here, too, some filter is better than just *Lowest* & *Highest*, as in:
*From $ 1 to $ 10*, *from $ 10 to $ 20*,
but I think something of the sort is already there for prices.

Top Sellers

This, too, with a time-filter, as in
*BestSellers of last week, last month, last 6 months*, etc.

A filter applicable to each categories could be useful, too, as in:
*Best Sellers in Category 1*, * Top Sellers in Category 2*, etc.

Name

Here a nice feature, seen in few other carts, could be
a linked, click-able A to Z index, as in:
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U W X Y Z
each letter leading to one page with links to that specific letter’s names.

Review ratings

Here, also a time-filter, as in:
*Best Review Ratings in the last week, month, year*, etc.

A filter applicable to each categories could be useful, too, as in:
*Best Review Ratings in Category 1*,
* Top in Review Ratings in Category 2*, etc.

These would be great to have by default.
And the ability to enable / disable them.

There is really no end how one may *personalise* an advanced search
(see the Google one, for ex.)

In theory, this kind of filters, by time, quantity, etc.
are simple database queries
but, perhaps, they may slow down the servers,
if they are not implemented properly (indexing, etc.).

I guess on this topic and our suggestions
the expert coders of Magento will have something better to say.

So the best way would be to have admins make sorting options based on certain criterias.

Then it would be truly flexible.

That way you can construct any kind of sorting rules you feel suits you.

If it is not too hard to achieve that is.

to expand on this, i think categories should have the ability to individually default to a sorting option.

eg:
category 1, sorts by price on load.
category 2, sorts by name on load.

this would make it much easier to control the content the viewer sees straight up.

also the ability to sort by custom product attributes should be made easier.

These two suggestions would be valuable features in a Magento release.

WOOHOOO 1.3.0 brought about some of these changes!
