Unique product id for products with attributes

Does magento assign unique product ids for products with attributes. For example if there is a product
T shirt
but it has an attribute for colour
red,green,blue

If a user selects a red tshirt, will that have a unique product id, to identify it as a red tshirt, for stock control purposes, or do products with attributes all get lumped under one product id, such as tshirt?

Hi there,

If a user selects a red tshirt, will that have a unique product id, to identify it as a red tshirt, for stock control purposes, or do products with attributes all get lumped under one product id, such as tshirt?

It depends upon the way you create this T-Shirt with different colors.
If you use simple products with custom options for color variations, then red, blue, green will not have its own ID and will be linked to main products. Thus, this way you will not be able to track inventory of color variations.

If you use Configurable products, then each variation will be basically separate product with its own unique ID, so using them it is possible to track stock.

The difference between simple products with custom options and configurable products you can find here -

Hope it will be useful for you.

Thankyou, thats very good to know. I currently use oscommerce and that does not distinguish between product attributes for ids, which does cause inventory headaches.

I am planning to switch to magento, just want to make sure it does what i want it to do.
