How do I disable sales and just use Magento as a product catalog? (or do both sales/ no sales)

I’d like to use magento as a product catalog without sales/shopping cart.
Alternatively, I might need to take an either/or approach and show some products without offering them for sale, while showing other products that actually are for sale.

Perhaps there is a built-in way to do this which I’ve overlooked?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  thanks!
