After installing a fresh 1.4.0.1 installation and importing products/images everything seems to be working with the exception of the product page.  After selecting a category the various products come up correctly.  However, once you click on an individual product an error appears and the report shows the following:

Try deactivating all your modules, and most importantly make sure your theme is compatible with 1.4.

I have disabled modules in the admin panel, but I see old modules listed in the database.  Most of these are not installed on the 1.4.0.1 but were from the 1.3.2.4 installation.  Does anyone know how to clean the database to only have the required content for the existing products, categories, attributes then import into a clean 1.4.0.1 installation?

The issue has been fixed with changes to the database to remove a module was in the 1.3.2.4 version but was removed during the 1.4.0.1 upgrade.

As a side note, to temporarily disable your custom modules you just have to put your module(s) xml (app/etc/module/yourmodule.xml) on active => false.
Disabling them in the admin panel (configuration -> advanced) will only disable their output: they are still accessed by magento and can potentially create errors.
