Upgrade via Connect Manager?

I have put magento-core/Mage_All_Latest in the extension key field and clicked the Install button.
Everything seemed to have been installed just fine!
No errors at all.
But when I log in the admin panel and when I see the front end I do not see any difference!
Well I was expecting to realise that the upgrade was succesfull if I could see a change at the version that appears at the footer of the admin panel.
But nothing changed. The version is still 1.3.2.4.
So how can I know if the upgrade was made?
Is there anything else that I must do to complete the upgrade through Connect manager?
Thank you!

Same problem upgrading via Connect Manager.

I have search the trees and found out that all the files are installed in the /downloader/pearlib/download directory. None of the files are installed in the map /app

My magento test environment is version running under xamp, normally now problem installing/upgrading extensions. What todo to upgrade correctly?

With regards.

The point is that I have succesfully done the upgrade through connect manager but nothing has changed at the back-end or at the front-end. How can we know if the upgrade was really made?
Ps: I have cleaned the cache.

I have the same issue and I even downloaded the lastest 1.4.0.1 archive and did a fresh install.  But when I log into the admin section it prompts me to upgrade to 1.4.01.  I even dumped the entire install and tried again just to make sure I was running the correct installer which says 1.4.01 at the bottom.

I even checked my /app/mage.php file and this is the following static function

public static function getVersionInfo()
{
return array(
‘major’ => ‘1’,
‘minor’ => ‘4’,
‘revision’ => ‘0’,
‘patch’ => ‘1’,
‘stability’ => ‘’,
‘number’ => ‘’,
);
}

so I have the 1.4.01 version running, but the admin claims I am out of date.

The best way to upgrade to 1.4.x is a full release upgrade, i.e. overwriting 1.3.x install with 1.4.x with proper backup and cache disabling and cleaning.

Magento Connect install is not reliable for major upgrades, for instances for some reason some packages are not downloaded completely, which prevents them from being unpacked later on and causes incorrect upgrade.
