Hello,
Am I the only one in the world having problems with this? I’ve looked all over the web for an answer.
The rating system works fine the issu is the stars not showing.
Message instead of the rating stars is = Rating isn’t Available
Could someone point me in the direction of a lead?
Version is 1.4 of Magento.

Let me share my experience and hope it helps. I was looking for the solution for a whole day and finally found the answer.

Check if your skin’s CSS contains:
/* Rating */
.no-rating { margin:0; }

.ratings { font-size:11px; line-height:1.25; margin:7px 0; }
.ratings strong { float:left; margin:1px 3px 0 0; }
.ratings .rating-links { margin:0; }
.ratings .rating-links .separator { margin:0 2px; }
.ratings dt {}
.ratings dd {}
.rating-box { width:69px; height:13px; font-size:0; line-height:0; background:url(../images/bkg_rating.gif) 0 0 repeat-x; text-indent:-999em; overflow:hidden; }
.rating-box .rating { float:left; height:13px; background:url(../images/bkg_rating.gif) 0 100% repeat-x; }
.ratings .rating-box { float:left; margin-right:3px; }
.ratings .amount {}

.ratings-table th,
.ratings-table td { font-size:11px; line-height:1.15; padding:3px 0; }
.ratings-table th { font-weight:bold; padding-right:8px; }

As well as the “bkg_rating.gif” image

I checked the CSS to confirm the above post.  Everything seems to be there.  I also checked in the advanced area of the backend to make sure that it was enabled....however, I still do not see any ‘stars’ to ‘rate’ the product.

I had this same issue where the star rating would not show.  The styles mentioned above were in my stylesheet.  I ended up having to go to Admin -> Catalog -> Reviews and Ratings -> Manage Ratings.  Then click on each rating and assign it to my store and then save.  After that the ratings appeared correctly.

Evidently there is no global setting for review ratings?

I can’t for the life of me find the “Reviews & Ratings” option in the admin.  All I see is “Product Reviews”, and the only option in there is to allow guests to write reviews.  Where can I find the option to enable ratings?

Figured it out.  Go to Catalog > Reviews & Ratings > Manage Ratings

Once you’re in there you should be default see price, value and quality.

Click into each one, make sure to choose your store view that you want the rating enabled for.

Once you do that to each “rating”, it should be available.
