I just started testing the 1.8.1 upgrade in a development copy of the working site.
It was working ok on 1.8. After upgrade to 1.8.1 I can\\\\\\\’t span subcategories on product adding or editing.

In categories management it works fine.

Tested on three browsers with the same result.

Any clue?

Works fine here.

Check that you don’t have modules running on admin backend and try disabling them.

Hi there,

Our client has this same issue. Looking for a solution but nothing as yet. Anyone else found a solution or a workaround for this?

I have had this problem on 2 or 3 upgrades. Here’s a solution (it is down to failed copies of files in upgrade - not bothered to find which files as needed a fix urgently)

1) Download a full new copy of 1.8.1 & extract to a folder
2) delete .htaccess if you have modified your own installed version (or re-edit after)
3) Backup live installation - all files and MySQL database (turn caching & compilation off)
4) Keep copies of any core files / default files you have modified
5) Copy over your live site with the full 1.8.1 files you downloaded earlier
6) Re-edit any core files / default files you have modified (use Notepad++ to do any file compares)
7) You may need to “chown” (change ownership) of files or reset file attributes
8) Turn caching & compilation back on if required

This worked for me.

Hello guys

I have faced same issue after upgrade from 1.3.2.4 to 1.8.1.0

Problem is category tree (“path” column) and messed up “level” and “children_count” columns in \"catalog_category_entity\" table.

Here is the solution to overcome this issue.

Run following two SQL queries on database, it will re-solve this problem

Note : Please backup your database before run Sqls

UPDATE catalog_category_entity SET level = (SELECT LENGTH(path)-LENGTH(REPLACE(path,'/','')) AS tmpl FROM (SELECT FROM catalog_category_entity) AS table1 WHERE catalog_category_entity.entity_id table1.entity_id);

UPDATE catalog_category_entity SET children_count = (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM (SELECT FROM catalog_category_entity) AS table2 WHERE path LIKE CONCAT(catalog_category_entity.path,"/%"));

Please try to reinstall first with Magento Connect Manager!
Then check your backend overrides.
If that is still not working you can try the posts above.
