WTF!  I have no idea what I was doing
but I just lost the main category links off all my pages.

I’ve been up and down, sideways through the admin panels without finding the switch,
so how can I ensure that I have categories turned on so they show
up on the template!?!

You need to update. Its a known bug that’s been fixed as of yesterday.

That patch did not work… although I am still running 1.0

I guess I need to upgrade to the new version.

Is there a simple PEAR or shell command routine for upgrading
without nuking files that I have modified such as index, .htaccess
as well as my default folders / css / images etc?

Thanks.

As far as I know the patch doesn’t reverse anything that’s already been done but prevent it from happening again. As to your other questions.. someone else can help you with that.

My problem is not related to the bug.

I have no front end users, I see all my categories in the admin panel,
I just can’t get them to show up on any of the pages.

I am having a similar problem…

I’ve created a category called C1. It is enabled. I have created another category C2. It is a child of C1. It is also enabled.

I have created product P1 and P2. Both are enabled. Both are associated with C2.

I do not see either the C1 or C2 category across the top of my store page.

What am I doing wrong? Any advice on how to debug this?

I found the problem.

The root category was not set properly at the store level.

1. System->Manage Store
2. Click the proper store. (In my case, I only have one store, so I clicked the “Main Website Store")
3. Set “Root Category” to the appropriate category. (C2 in my case.)
4. Save.
5. Refresh Home page.
--> Voila! C2 is displayed.
