You can remove the compare sidebar link in…
layout/catalog.xml
and the “add to compare” link in…
template/catalog/product/view/addto.thtml

Doesn’t shut it off, exactly, just hides it.

Thanks, I like this :D

//This for product page

Using Magento 1.1.6, I have commented out the line

<block type="core/template" before="cart_sidebar" name="catalog.compare.sidebar" template="catalog/product/compare/sidebar.phtml"/>

As mentioned in several posts, from the app/design/frontend/default/default/layout/catalog.xml file.

The sidebar does NOT disappear.

Have I misread the solution?  Any help would be appreciated.

this will do:  <remove name="catalog.compare.sidebar" />

Once this goes away, it’s best to remove ‘add to compare’ from the ‘addto’ in the product view page and list mode in the list page, so that your user won’t click on the link.

There’s one more thing you have to edit to completely hide the “Compare Products” sidebar callout…

template/catalog/product/compare/sidebar.phtml

Just go ahead and comment out the whole thing and with the combination of that and the editing of those two other files you mentioned POOF! It’s gone!
