Mmmm… did you try upgrading Magento from MagentoConnect Manager or from shell
I tried upgrading from MagentoConnect Manager without uploading “Modern Theme” but nothing showed up as an upgrade. There was another post somewhere on the forum where someone downloaded “Modern Theme” and got the upgrade at the same time. Not sure what the bug is but I decided to give that method a try myself.
So, to answer your question, I upgraded using MagentoConnect Manager and the upgrade just tagged along with the theme. I also have another cart running at 1 & 1 so I tried the same thing there. Was unable to get upgrade using MagentoConnect Manager on 1 & 1 as well until I downloaded the “Modern Theme”. Same result, Modern Theme came down too but only after the upgrade had downloaded.
@dell: If you did not have any packages in MagentoConnect Manager, that means Magento was installed by unpacking tarball file without use of PEAR.
In this case, to install latest version in MagentoConnect Manager, put “magento-core/Mage_All_Latest” in Extension key field and click Install.
I suspect that 1&1;has memory limit locked and can’t be increased from .htaccess or from code temporarily, so the PEAR installation runs out of memory.
It is possible to run “magento-core/Mage_All_Latest” installation few times by refreshing the screen after the browser indicates end of transmission. This way packages will be installed as memory limit allows, eventually completing full installation.
i upgraded too. did a fresh install and import the database but as in the previous version, the modern theme is not working properly. meaning, I don’t have any links working.
anyone can help?
thank you!
Followed your guidance above on both installations and brought down one additional package at each. Both now show all available upgrades installed (1 & 1 and SimpleHelix). Appreciate the help.

Hi Moshe
did as you suggested and now have this screen below. Does this mean the upgrade was successful?
Hi - I have tried to update, but because I have changed my default folder from ‘magento’ to ‘shop’, it doesn’t seem to have worked as it still says Magento ver. 1.0 in the admin footer. When I look at the files using my ftp program, I can see that a new folder has been created called magento - I think this is where the updates have been put. How can I get Magento Connect Manager to upload to the folder ‘shop’ where my magento install is located?
Hi Moshe - thanks for the advice, but I tried something else.
I uninstalled the extensions. Changed the folder back to Magento and links in config and reinstalled the extensions and it update fine (the version changed in admin). I had to install the Fooman Fix for Non-Working Admin Menus. A problem I have now is that when I make a change in admin, I get the error message “A file permissions error has occurred. Please check the permissions on the script and the directory it is in and try again.” instead of the report bar appearing. the address bar says: /magento/report/?id=-528417602&s;=admin
any ideas? We appreciate all the help your giving on all the forums - an impossible task, thanks for trying.
My simplehelix upgrade…
1) remember your database passwords and connection info.
2) delete origional Magento install
3) Upload MAgento ‘Downloader” (1.0) package and use it to install without using the Installatron script installer on Simple Helix.
4) Follow prompts of downloader/installer for database info.
5) Once installed, set extension upgrade setting to accept “Alpha” versions then run it to install sub version changes. (if set to beta or stable, it will NOT upgrade)
well...I just uploaded the new magento directory using filezilla (overwriting the old directory) and then uploaded/installed the patch file. went to admin and at the bottom it has the “Magento ver. 1.0.19700”. So I guess I’m done??? It can’t be that easy...surely...how can I find out if it actually is all done??

Once again, you are my hero - that fixed all my backend issues! It was missing some the packages for Interface_Adminhtml_Default and Interface_Frontend_Default.
Where do we change the email templates now? They don’t seem to be working anymore - my customers are now receiving the dummy template emails.
