How is about creating directories for each product id and check if they contain files (by custom block) ? And create a simple custom module for uploading or even use ftp ...

Hello guys, it looks like our Useful Downloads could at least partially solve this issue. Currently it is not possible to show video with its help, however you can provide any types of files for free download, so it can be used for providing manuals, brochures, support documentation, etc. Please feel free to read more about it here:

I’m using the Useful Downloads extension to solve this product support document issue and it works great! I highly recommend it.

I have created a solution for attaching PDF’s on our product pages. We are using the modern theme tab function. Although the code could be placed where ever you wish.

First I created text field attributes for the actual PDF file name and then for the frontend display name (see image 1). My set up allows for up to 5 file to be attached to any one product.

Second use the following code in your phtml file where you wish to pdf links to show up. For me it is in a modern tab file that creates it’s own tab. Be sure to replace “Support_file_1” & “Support_file_1_frontendname” with your attribute codes. Also replace your directory location mine is /media/support/ & img src for your pdf icon.

<?php if($this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_1()): ?>
<div class="product-specs">
<
p><a href="/media/support/<?php echo $this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_1() ?>"><img src="http://biofeedbackcentral.com/media/support/pdf_icon.jpg"><?php echo $this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_1_frontendname() ?></a></p>
</
div>
<?php endif; ?>
<?php
if($this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_2()): ?>
<div class="product-specs">
<
p><a href="/media/support/<?php echo $this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_2() ?>"><img src="http://biofeedbackcentral.com/media/support/pdf_icon.jpg"><?php echo $this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_2_frontendname() ?></a></p>
</
div>
<?php endif; ?>
<?php
if($this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_3()): ?>
<div class="product-specs">
<
p><a href="/media/support/<?php echo $this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_3() ?>"><img src="http://biofeedbackcentral.com/media/support/pdf_icon.jpg"><?php echo $this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_3_frontendname() ?></a></p>
</
div>
<?php endif; ?>
<?php
if($this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_4()): ?>
<div class="product-specs">
<
p><a href="/media/support/<?php echo $this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_4() ?>"><img src="http://biofeedbackcentral.com/media/support/pdf_icon.jpg"><?php echo $this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_4_frontendname() ?></a></p>
</
div>
<?php endif; ?>
<?php
if($this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_5()): ?>
<div class="product-specs">
<
p><a href="/media/support/<?php echo $this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_5() ?>"><img src="http://biofeedbackcentral.com/media/support/pdf_icon.jpg"><?php echo $this->getProduct()->getSupport_file_5_frontendname() ?></a></p>
</
div>
<?php endif; ?>

Upload your images to the directory and wholla! (see image2)

First I created text field attributes for the actual PDF file name and then for the frontend display name (see image 1)…

Thats the point. I make it the same way. This give you much more comfort if you make dataflow imports with many produts. If you have > 1000 products I guess nobody wants to upload each file in the backend.

I recommend jarhodys soloution as it will only affect the template files.

Another soloution which is quite easy, quick and dirty would be to place all documents with the sku in an folder. Later in the .phtml not check for the attributes instead simply check if the file “sku."pdf exists. This way you simply have to upload the necessary files but would not have the comfort to label each of the PDF files with your custom description.

Hi Guys

We currently have video load in an external player on our VPASP cart but I’m looking to move over to Magneto and want to be able to do the same.

Currently I place the URL to the video in a specified field in the product admin page. This then adds this to the code within that page.

the nice thing is, it only displays the “watch video” button if there is actually something to be played.

See an example here… http://www.fireworkscrazy.co.uk/store/shopexd.asp?id=290

Can this be re-created in Magento?

Hi,

well if you only have one video per item this isnt a big problem.
Just create an attribute in the magento admin panel called “video” or something like this. Set it as not visible for the frontend (this way it does not show up in the list of attributes on the product page).
Now you have a additional field in the add/edit section of your product editor. Also you can now use this field if you import data through dataflow.

Now you have to edit the specific template file for the product page. Check if the attribute “video” is set. If it is set parse the necessary code for the player, include the URL from the “video” attribute, thats it. This way the Player/Start button will only appear if you have entered a video URL in the product page.

If you need more help which file to edit and how to check if the attribute is set, let me know.

Hello,

If you are still interested in extended solution for managing files and product attachments please check this out:
http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/file-downloads-and-product-attachments.html

This extension allows to upload files, group them by category and assign to a product or some/all products at once, limit access by customer groups, limit the number of downloads etc It won’t solve the problem with displaying videos but probably will help us to give your customers more advanced understanding of what you are selling.

There is also a simpler module that addresses these issues for the price of £55.00. You can find it located at http://magentomechanics.com/product-file-uploader-v2.html.

Hi all .. this is just my “10 cents” on this issue.

OK I have been trying to solve this formyself for an hour or 2 now. I also insist in taking time to understand the ways in which these problems are always fixed rather just purchasing a module.

This is the easiest, quickest and FREE method I have used.

1 - Create a folder on your server for your downloadable information. I am using Datasheets which begin with code X. Therefore for simplicity I named the folder “x”. I then uploaded ALL of my datasheets to this folder on my server. Whilst doing this, I downloaded a PDF Image and threw this in the folder too.

2 - Go to “Attributes/Manage Attributes” and add a new Attribute. Attribute Code for me was datasheet. I chose yes for available in searches as some customers will know what datasheets they are looking for, or at least the X codes will bring a selection. I also chose Visible on product view and used in product listing. Then go to Manage Label / Options. I named mine Datasheet in the Admin box. Save the new attribute.

3 - Go to Attributes. Manage Atribute Sets and open your Attribute Set. On the right you should now see this new Attribute (again, mine is datasheet. Drag the Attribute and drop it where it is required to show. I already had an Attribute called Manufacturer, so under here was perfect. Click Save Attribute Set.

4 - OK so now when you go to your existing Product in “Manage Products”, you should have the “Datasheet” option. For this part I created some coding in a basic WYSIWYG Editor.  This was the code I used :

<p>
    <
a href="http://www.MYDOMAIN/x/MYDATASHEET.pdf"><img alt="" src="http://www.MYDOMAIN/x/datasheet.gif" style="width: 25px; height: 23px;" /></a></p>

For you, just replace “MYDOMAIN” with yours of course, replace the “x” with the folder you uploaded your data and image too and of course change the name of the image to the one you uploaded to the folder. The main thing you have to do is link your data, the MYDATASHEET.pdf, just overwrite it with the name of the file you want your customers to read.

When you now view your Products it should say Datasheet (or what you chose) underneath with an image and a link into the file in your folder.

I hope this helps some people and it is worded to help novices and intermediates. If you need more help on this topic, please reply to it and I will help you solve this.

P.S this method will save you at least £55. Enjoy!

Hello,

File Downloads & Product Attachments extension now supports video files that can be played directly on product pages.
https://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/file-downloads-and-product-attachments.html

Check some screenshots for better understanding. Hopefully, this solution will work for uploading downloadable files, video files for your products. Moreover, the extension now allows adding external links.
