Hi,
You might want to consider using our Magento Booster extension. It fully caches the pages and, without initializing Magento, provides your visitors with ready output that takes significantly less time to load. It also deflates the size of the JavaScript code on your website, which contributes to the faster page rendering. Please visit http://www.aitoc.com/en/magento_booster.html to read more about this extension and watch the test performance videos.

Magento is faster than Joomla version with their Shop. cart, this is my experience.

The key?  There are ways to optimize your server most were mentioned in the links above.  You can only do so much with the resources you have.  The key piece of the equation is available system resources.

Did you read the white papers?  It is for the Enterprise Edition, but most is still relevant for CE.

You need to identify where the bottle necks are.  phpmyadmin can help you to identify issues with the database ex slow queries.  You can also edit the amount of memory php uses and see if it makes a difference.  You may also have bandwidth issues you can check that by uploading a big file to your server and see how long it takes to download.

may be the speed is affected by some custom codes , though the core magento code is slow , i find the custom code(my add for some features ) is slower . I need to check my code ? or .....
