I’m looking to purchase an SSL Certificate. Could someone list some of the pros/cons to look for when shopping for a certificate?
I’m trying to decided between purchasing through MediaTemple ($10/mo + Setup fee) or going through GoDaddy.com ($30/yr) . Aside from cost, is there any major difference?
I am also looking to buy an SSL certificate ...And for me as I am just starting, I need an decent low cost SSL that will help reassure my users that the site is secure .... that way Go-Daddy looks better for me ...
To be honest as long as a certificate is compatible with all the main browsers it makes no difference who you go with. We used to have a comodo certificate complete with a nice little logo that advertised their certificates. Nobody ever clicked on the logo to find out more about the certificate. When it was up for renewal we went for a RapidSSL certificate at a fraction of the cost and don’t display any logo anymore. Not a single customer has emailed or phoned to ask anything about the certificate, and no reduction in completed sales have been seen.
As far as I can see the only thing consumers are concerned about is do they get re-directed to a https:// page and does the padlock show that the page is secure. They couldn’t care less who issued the certificate.
To be honest I get a bit worried when I visit sites that display Verisign logos for their certificates as it make me think they are probably not that net savvy having wasted money on a verisign certificate and as well as that are likely to be running on managed windows servers at some ISP that is equally clueless.

We’ve installed Godaddy SSL’s for a few of our clients. They do take a little longer to install because of the intermediate cert, but they seem to work just as well as the more popular RapidSSL Cert we offer. If you are looking for a very affordable and easy to install SSL Certificate, I recommend a RapidSSL. For the larger stores, with more transactions, I definitely recommend looking into a full validation EV cert.
I second the choice of RapidSSL certs. To me they are far more reliable and prestigious when compared to GoDaddy’s.
If you are operating a really large store, I recommend you to look at some other certs from GeoTrust like QuickSSL, True Business ID, etc.
Is there any reason to use an SSL CERT lets say “If you are doing the final purchases through PAYPAL or something other like that?
If you are asking people for any personal details such as name, address, phone number, DOB etc etc you really should be using an SSL cert to ensure this data is protected.
As the previous posters have said an SSL cert does not have to cost the earth. For our clients we offer Rapid SSL and have had no issues. If the client has a higher turnover we offer more expensive SSL certs with a higher guarantee value.
i guess what i mean to say is Do i need to use an SSL for the magento script to work.
Will it ONLY work if i have an SSL
and NOT work if i dont have one?
