Magento

I might be imagining things but in a previous version of Magento I was working with I could have sworn there was a main catalog page that you could navigate to (http://yoursite.com/catalog).  Is this still available? 
On my test server with a default installation of Magento v1.0 it just redirects to the main page (http://yoursite.com) when trying to go to the catalog page (http://yoursite.com/catalog).

If there is no longer such a page, how do I create a static page that would display a similar page view of the catalog root?

Any help is much appreciated.
