App/Code/Local not being load

I have a fresh installation of Magento 1.8.

I have compilation turned off.
I have all caches turned off.

I’m trying to update the Contact form IndexController.php file.

So I uploaded this file to:
app/code/local/Mage/Contacts/controllers/IndexController.php

But any changes I made to it weren’t being shown on the front end.

So, I deleted the core file:
app/code/core/Mage/Contacts/controllers/IndexController.php

And the Contact form page then said 404 - Not found.

So, even though I have a local file uploaded, it’s not being recognized by Magento.

What’s going on here?

Something obvious, but did you remember to clear your cache?

Yes, numerous times. It’s turned off, completely in fact.

However, it appears that the compiler keeps re-enabling itself on its own.

How do I clear the compiler manually?

Edit the includes/config.php and comment out the two “define” statements on the bottom of the file.

Alternatively, you may comment out the following from index.php:

$compilerConfig MAGENTO_ROOT '/includes/config.php';
if (
file_exists($compilerConfig)) {

include $compilerConfig;
}
