Varien and/or the devel community does need to address the speed issue, that said I would recommend a dedicated server. I’ve used RackSpace in the past and the are awesome. When we move to our production server we will be using them or ServerBeach. Also using Goolge’s new Crome web browser speeds up magneto by more than 50%
Sorry guys but there is something up with the speed of magento! :(
I am loving everything about the software other than the speed. I am running a local dev copy on my development pc - Quad core with 4Gb ram, latest apache, latest php5 and latest mysql 5… i have other site/ecommerce software running on the same system that runs extreamly quick, magento should to but something seems to be boggin it down.
I was hoping to use magento for a client of mine who has a very well know discount clothing company but at the moment i cannot justify the speed of the system. :(
My question is; is this being looked into and or what can i try?

Indeed -
There are two requirements to have Magento run well. The first is the hardware you are throwing at the application - from the sounds of it, you have this one covered - A dedi with your specs WILL run Magento fast, but not without optimized configurations for MySQL and the web server of your choice.
My guess is that latter is where you are missing the mark. Take a look at the Magento blog for “Optimizing Magento” and some of the Magento Groups also have excellent advise.
There’s an awful lot of complaints in this thread, however I dont really believe they are well founded. The simple fact is that Magento runs very well under optimized conditions.
Here’s a few impressive example sites that could provide inspiration - they are all running very similar hardware to yours.
