Lets say I’m editing “2columns-left.phtml” template. I come to left column part which is called wit:h

<?php echo $this->getChildHtml('left'?>
Now how do I know where can I find template for the left column? Becuse page.xml doesn’t give me the (exact) template name - I just have to guess it?

fortunately magento has a easier way to see the template path......

Just go to Admin->System->Configuration->Developer then select the store from the top-left dropdown box. Now select the Debug option change Template Path Hints to Yes.

Now refresh your frontend pages & u will seee template path hints.

Enjoy......... wink

If you’re looking for the actual content and not just the layout - I believe it’s in catalog.xml

But isn’t there any logical way to derive this? Switching/refreshing the page for seeing this is very time consuming.

I dont think there is another way....... wink

because the name inside the getChildHtml() method is not anyway logically related to the directory structure.

Ok this isn’t very good.

Somehow my “Template path hints” doesn’t work. I have enabled those in every config but still nothing. Is there anything more I have to do or enable to make those hitns work? And are there any template code referances for hints or do these hints come automatically?

Ok I got this. The problem was that I had assigned our network IP with wildcards and Magento didn’t understand it correctly, so it didn’t show debug info for me.

Much better now! :D
