Getting my first products into Magento with DataFlow toke me some hours, but after lots of trial & errors and lots of reading on this forum I learned a lot. I will explain here how I managed to import products with multiple-images and multiple-languages.

My store configuration:
Website - Store - Store View (default)
Website - Store - Store View (spanish)
Website - Store - Store View (french)
Website - Store - Store View (italian)
Website - Store - Store View (german)

The CVS file
I used a CVS file, but i guess this should work just fine with a Excel XML file. I’ve attached an example of my CVS file to this post.

Magento uses the SKU as the unique identifier. So in this example of simple products, you see only one product, in 5 languages with 3 pictures. Because the rows all share the same SKU, Magento knows it is a single product.

Images
You don’t need to supply the image, small_image and thumbnail for each language, because the image is shared between the Store Views. If you do supply the image, you will get duplicate images. The image names can be whatever you like and should be the same as the real images. The small_image and thumbnail is not autogerenated, so you need to create them as well. Lots of freeware tools are available to do this job at once. Files needs to be uploaded to your /media/import folder on you host.

The only problem I have with image at this moment is the “Excluded” option is checked on the default Store View for all images, and on all other Store Views “Excluded” isnt checked on any image. The result of this is:

- Defaul Store View “More Views” on product level doesn’t show any images. You only see the first image above More Views
- All other Store Views show all images on “More Views” of this SKU. This includes the thumbnail and the small_image. So I have each image 3 times on product level.

None-English Locale in Admin panel
When you don’t use the default, english locale, but for example the Dutch locale, your Import has to reflect the translations as well. I was using the Dutch translation for the Admin panel and couldn’t get my products Status enabled on import. When I used the translated version of Enabled ("Aan") it worked. So if you have problems importing, try to use the default locale, english.

If you think it can be done easier let me know, but this worked fine for me. It would also be nice to see some examples of other configurations. Like multiple websites, multiple stores, grouped or configurable products.

Disclaimer: My mother tongue isn’t english so don’t shoot me for my spelling and grammar.

Herman,

I upload all my pictures and I update the DB using an XML file but I can’t see pictures. What I’m doing wrong? Or I need to activate something?

Pd: My first intent to do this was uploading the pictures in media/import as you mention bur with out success.

Wich is you mother tongue?

_sm and _thumb are create by magento

But can I create Small/thumb with Photoshop instead of letting Magento generate those?

What I did was
image :  /SPPRINA408_600.jpg
small:  /SPPRINA408_125.jpg
thumb :  /SPPRINA408_95.jpg

And the folder should be: media/import RIGHT?

Here is how I managed to import a product with images:
1. Create a new Import Profile:
Entity Type: Products
Direction: Import
Data Transfer: Interactive
Data Format: CSV
Value Delimiter: ,
Enclose Values In: “
Original Magento attribute names in first row: No

2. Field Mapping - click “+ Add Field Mapping” and specify each of the columns in your CSV file in the order that they appear. Use the example above for which fields you need. I have a custom Attribute set, so I had a couple different fields.
Tip: start out by not mapping your images—make sure everything else works fine

3. Click “Save and Continue Editing” (of your import profile)

4. Create your CSV file: start out with 1 product until things work
a. It’s okay to start with Excel, but after you save as CSV, open the CSV file in NOTEPAD
b. Enclose all fields in “ “
c. I also removed any weird/special characters such as hard returns
d. Keep your Short Description short. I hit errors when I tried including several sentences. I believe this is a bug since I can add a pretty long “short description” via the gui.
e. Delete the top, header row with attribute names. No one else has mentioned having to do this, but I had to. Make sure there are no blank lines above or below your product row.

5. Try your import
a. In your Import Profile, click “Upload File” on the left menu
b. Browse and select your file
c. Click “Save and Continue Editing”
d. Click “Run Profile” in the menu on the left
e. Select the file you uploaded in the dropdown menu. After you have done this once, you may want to delete the old import files from the /var/import directory
f. Click “Run Profile in Popup”

6. If you get errors, double-check that you have included all required attributes and in the correct order, don’t have spelling errors, all items are enclosed in double-quotes, there are no extra line breaks before/after your row of data, you removed the header row…

7. Once things are working (go back and delete the newly added product), try the images
a. Upload your image file(s) to /media/import
b. Update your field mapping and add image, small_image, thumbnail
c. Update your CSV file (just do this in Notepad to avoid any issues): add your images at the end of the line, separated by a comma, preceded by a backslash and enclosed in double-quotes. I.e. you will need to type: ,"/myimage.gif”,"/mysmallimage.gif”,"/mythumbnail.gif"
d. Upload your new CSV file and try the import again

I was having some problems importing a few products with really long description and/or short_description columns in CSV format, but now that I’m saving it out as Excel XML and importing with that method, I’m not having the same problems.  Just a tip for anyone who may want to try Excel XML instead of CSV.

Edited: On second thought, I may still be having issues, but I do not get any errors in my import window, whereas before I had many errors in the import window on the CSV method.  And my descriptions are shorter than the 65k char allowed for TEXT column in Mysql.  I’ll post more when I figure it out.

Final Edit:
My import went ok—I had some products that had the same SKU as others, so they were overwriting each other.  Made my SKUs unique and everything is good.

It took me awhile to get through the upload because when I started mapping fields, I wasn’t including all the required fields.  Now the trick was I can’t see anywhere where it states what is required and was is optional.

So if you have the same problems I did, here are the required fields (when doing a custom mapping):
store
attribute_set
type
sku
name
description
short_description
weight
price
tax_class_id

Once I did those fields (in that order) all seemed to work fine.

Hope it helps.

Thanks dansampson! This solved my problem.
Now I’m trying to make my images get imported (I put links to images in another website): is this supposed to work?

However there is still another problem if I delete the images columns in my CSV file. The import is smooth but instead of the src url of the image on front-end, there is a big error:
<img src=”
Fatal error: Ignoring exception from Varien_Image_Adapter_Gd2::__destruct() while an exception is already active (Uncaught Exception in /homepages/36/d214355004/htdocs/linkova/store/app/code/core/Mage/Core/functions.php on line 244) in /homepages/36/d214355004/htdocs/linkova/store/app/code/core/Mage/Catalog/Model/Product/Image.php on line 214

You can check this here, at least until it is resolved grin.

Like for the not displayed items on front-end when specified “admin” as store_id instead of “default”, to make this disappear I have to go into each product and save it manually.

Any idea?

I am getting the same error as Mayorwin, but it is occuring when simply adding an image to a simple product using the admin.

Any direction on what to look for would be appreciated.

things I found out....

1.It should work equally well using CSV or XML file from Excel.. but the trick is when exporting from Excel as a CSV to export as a (Windows CSV file). I’m on a Mac so Excel give me three choices… CSV, DOS CSV, and Windows CSV. The regular CSV export didn’t work for me at all… but Windows CSV went through without a hitch.

My problem is that I have to manually go into each product image and uncheck the “exclude” box for my images to show up....

a lot less tedious than entering every product into the backend.. but still a lot more work than I want to do…

any idea how to get around this?

hi there,

I have 8 images in my one product and when I’ve export it, somehow the only image that exported is just the first image and when I try to look at the CSV file in the attribute “image” there’s only one image path that’s in there. I wonder what happen with the other images, and if I do an import, can I add another path to this attribute “image” for the other images that is lost?..I hope someone can point me to something that explain all of this. Thanks in advance, I really appreciate you attention to this matter.
