I am using Magento CE 1.7 and will agree with all other users/members who complain about Magento speed. For better speed it require good hosting and server hardware. I am hoping to upgrade to Magento 1.8 soon and will check the difference. Any body experienced Magento 1.8 speed? Before upgrading i want to know about other users experience.

Thanks.

Magento does not need to be slow. What kind of server are you hosting on and what steps have you taken to optimize the performance? Things like APC/XCache, Memcached and MySQL config tuning are things you can look into to boost Magento speed.

Here are the steps which we have followed to update from 1.6.2 to 1.7.0:

1.Navigate your Magento Connect Manager to System > Magento Connect > Magento Connect Manager.
2.Now login your Magento Connect Admin by filling username and password.
3.Go to http://yourdomain.com/magento/downloader/
4.In the Install New Extensions > Paste extension key to install, Type “connect20.magentocommerce.com/community/Mage_All_Latest”
5.You might get an error like:

“CONNECT ERROR: Package ‘Mage_All_Latest’ is invalid”
The reason for such error might be because of the files already existing.
For removing this error, you need to Follow these 2 steps:
a) Go to downloader\\lib\\Mage\\Connect\\Validator.php
b) Remove :
if (file_exists($dest)) {  $this->addError(\"\’{$file}\’ already exists\");

6. After removing above error, don’t forget to clear cache and session. Delete everything in /var/cache and /var/session
7. Some of you may receive “500 Internal Server Error”. This is because for folder & File Permissions. Change the permission to 777 (app/etc, media, var) and 775 to mage file.
8. In case you get Service Temporarily Unavailable, don’t worry about it . This comes as the website is set to offline mode during upgrade. In order to fix this, you need to delete the maintenance.flag file in the root of your magento installation directory.

Thanks very simple and valuable solution for the upgrade process.

It cannot be anything more than marginally faster, that would require a full code rewrite and would break most of the extensions. We are upgrading various sites and new installs with 1.8, normally we prefer to wait but need the slight indexing improvement dealing with 100s thousands of products. In the end with 1.x it is hosting, hosting, hosting, and don’t hold your breath for 2.x, there are too many business factors influencing its release for the new owners relating to where they want to position the product, even if they released it now it would be a 9-12mth cycle time before it was realistically usable anyway so 2015 is probably a realistic target (this all comes from some very high-end consultants).

As normal, work on the basis of hosting being 0.5-1% of revenue on a top-tier specialist provider, most undercut this but then there is a good reason 95% of sites fight for 50% of the revenue, seriously, the top 5% have 50% of the revenue but then their hosting is 1-2s and sub-second which is what we use, but we use architecture designed by the same consultants which is probably not fair but there you go.

@MagenX: I know. These forums are turning into a playground for spammers and copywriters. I always report posts that are obvious spam, but seems like the moderators are on a break. Hopefully we can get some moderators that actually care and get these forums back to what they were, without all the crap posts..

The easiest and fastest way to speed up a magento store would be our Performance Extensions They are fully compatible with 1.8.
