How to display child categories inside category content?

I would really be interested in knowing how to do this. All of the nice functions in app/design/frontend/.../templates/catlog/navigation/left.phtml dont’ work from inside app/design/frontend/.../templates/category/product/view.phtml.

Any ideas on how to do that?

Turn off shipping or "pick up" option
How do I display the categories on the homepage NOT in the navbar? Like how do I get a category to display like a product on the main page?
