I have documented the SSH upgrade procedure I have followed to upgrade my Magento store in the following ticket:

Magento Upgrade 1.7.0.2 to 1.8.0.0

Feel free to ask if you have any problems.

I may be wrong, but it seems that 90% of people here dont have access to SSH and must update via Manual or FTP and PHP MYADMIN. A guide in this method would really help.

Hi @napromollo here is the method using FTP that I would use to upgrade from 1.7.0.2 to 1.8.0.0 (stable):

STEP 0: Development and staging upgrade

Please run this procedure under a development and/or staging environment before doing it in production, even if the procedure contains backup instructions, it’s always better when everything runs fine.

STEP 1: Maintenance mode

connect to your website via FTP
create a maintenance.flag file in the root directory of your magento installation

Time: 1min

STEP 2: Backup your database

If you don\’t have an SSH access, you can use phpmyadmin to backup your data.

Time: 5min (depends on the size of your database and the ressource of your server)

STEP 3: Backup your folders

Download you magento directory on your side to backup your files

Time: depends on the size of your folder and the ressource of your server it may take a very long time in FTP.

STEP 4: Upgrade

Delete the files under var/cache and var/session
Download magento 1.8.0.0 here
Extract the archive and transfer the files to your magento installation folder

Time: 5min

STEP 5: Reindex all

Access the backend and reindex everything under System > Index management

STEP 6: Make it live

Remove the maintenance.flag file you created at the beggining of the process.

(OPTIONAL) STEP 6: Fix your Tax settings

For those who have specific tax calculations, please have a look at the following link, some important changes have been made with 1.8.0.0 (you can find your tax settings in the backend under System > Configuration > Tax)
