Ok I have a ‘Fun’ situation with sales tax.  I managed to find an affordable service that will handle tax rate calculations and already has a working extension for Magento but how do I deal with tax exempt orders.  Basically I want the customer to be able to identify if their order is tax exempt or not, then if it’s listed as an exempt order it has to get approved by me, I need to have their tax exempt paperwork on file, then I approve the order once I get it faxed to me or can confirm I already have current paperwork on file. Once approved it can continue though the process.

I can’t just add people to a tax exempt group because some customers make make a combination of taxable and tax exempt orders.

You’re probably going to need someone to create a custom extension for that. It’s definitely not in the standard setup but pretty much anything is able with modifications.

ok i see, well considering I don’t have a lot of money to pay a developer i’d like to try my hand at this one.  SO undoubtedly I’ll be asking a lot of questions, starting with what is the easiest way to add a field to the checkout process?

We have a Sales Tax Exempt Extension available, it allows the customer to select during One-Page checkout that they are Tax Exempt and mandates they put their Tax ID number and Tax Issued State in before it allows them to proceed. Once input is entered, it removes tax from their order and all customers input data is displayed in their order for your tax records. Hopefully this will solve your issues!
